TZIXT: The eflect of irregular energy distribution in d-c glow discnarge
on the oxidation of nitrogen is studied. The experiment was made in a
qua rt z d i sc harge tube w i t n el ec t rod e8 p! aced vert i call ly one above t he
otner. The upper electrode (cathode) had a 1.4 mm channel for removing
tne NO formed in the cathode space, in order to determine this analytically.
Tnq experiments were made at 50, 100, 200, and 500 mm Hg and 50 -750 ma,
ai4o at 400 mm Hg and 50 - 800 ma. At 7ou ma, maximum concentration
%NO was obtained, being 7.4% at 50, 7.5% at 100, 7.2% at 200 - 300, and
7.1-/. at 400 mm Hg. At 400 mm Hg and 800 ma, 7.4% NO was obtainea. For
the synthesis of NO it is assumed that up to 300 ma the positive column
of tne glow diarliarge plays the main part. whereas at higher current

intensities tne effect of the cathode space sets in. Y.NQ a - b,, is

in tne positive column, the constant b the process in the region of the
cathode drop. Mne autnors obtained a 4.95 - 5.0~ and b - 0.0051.
The ',mit of the linear ncrease in ~.NO at increasing current intensity
was not reached in the experiment. There are 3 figures and 2 tables.

ABSTRACT: The article deals with the problem of direct indica-
tions for a wide application of antibiotics in re-
latively aseptic operations. Based on their exper-
iences in operations with the use of penicillin
and without it, the authors concluded that appendec-
tomy in chronic and acute catarrha.1 appendicites,
herniotomy and other Isentic operations ca-rried out
without antibiotics, have a good postoperative course.
In cases with obvious suspicion of an infection
(perforated gastric ulcer, volvulus, destructive

Tz'AT: A new oxidation-red-~ction (redox) system for initiating the f,rocess
of polymerization at low temperatures; is based on the use of hydroperoxide
of isopropylbenzene, ammonia, Elucose and sodium pyrophoaphate. Studj of
the influence of the individual components of the redox system on the rate
of polymerization revealed that an increase in the quantity of each of the
components was regularly accompanied by a rise in the polymerization rate,
which reached its maximum under specific conditions. The influence of the

TITLE: Nature of luminescence of activator-free zinc selenide
SOURCE: Fizika tverdogo tela, v. 6, no. 8, 1964, 2245-2248
TOPIC TAGS: zinc compound, luminor, lurrinescence, photolumines-
cence spectrum, emission spectrum, luminescence center
ABSTRACT: in view of the insufficient understanding of the nature of
the luminescence of luminors based on zinc selenide, the present in-
vestigation is devoted to a study of the nature of different bands
in the emission spectrum of a pure activator-free zinc selenide. To
this end, the zinc selenide was processed in zinc and selenium vapor,
and the photoluminescence spectra were investigated at low tempera-
tures. The signs of the photocurrent carriers were also determined.
Non-activated zinc selenide heated in vacuum was also tested. It is

shown that the green glow observed at low temperatures is connected
with the penetration of selenium atoms into the crystal lattice of
the zinc selenide, while the red glow is connected with penetration
of zinc atoms. The experimental procedure is briefly described. The
experimental facts show that two types of luminescence centers can
exist in the zinc selenide. In dddition, there is also a blue band
at a temperature -196C, consisting of several narrow bands. It is
produced by the excitons which arise following ultraviolet irradia-
tion of the zinc selenide. Differences between the present results
and those obtained by others are explained. "In conclusion, we are
grateful to F. M. Pekerman and Ya. A. Oksman for many valuable ad-
vices." Orig. art. has: 4 figures.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of the work in accurately to define the eftect of oxidizing
agents an ZnSe luminescence. In particular, the problem of determining the minimum
quantities of oxygen which cause a change in luminescent properties, and establish
the nature of these changes was raised. It van necessar7 to develop a special
method for this in order to determine the low quantities of oxygen in zinc aelenide.
(Figure 1 Enclosure) Data indicated that the presence of oxygen in zinc selenide
shovs up in the luminescent properties of a aelf-activated luninophore. This is
combined with the fomation of zinc oxide on the surface of the zinc selenide grain;
the zinc oxide being formed is activated by the selenium and its luminescence

( Xmax. a 610-620 mu ) is added to the zinc selenide luminescence. The displacement
of a maximum of radiation as a result of ZnSe oxidation can take place only when
the original zinc selenide has a lov luminescence brightness. Then the relation
of intensive luminescence of We and MO. Se dan reach a point where the mcmimum
rof the inte ral curve is moved to the short-wave side (in the extreme case up to
610-620 mp Based on data obtained, it is possible to assume that solubility of
oxygen in zinc selenide does not exceed 0.1 weight % in every case. However, this
value of solubility should first be examined since more accurate formulption of
the experiment is required in order to determine true solubility. Orig. art. has:

Octobor 1960. The articles deal with the mathczatloal theory
of platos and shells and Its application to the solution, In
both linear and nonlinear formulations, of probloms of bonding,
static and dynamic stability, and vioration of rogular and
sandwich plates and shellb Of Various shapes under various
loadings In the elastic and plastic regions. Anc-4yals is made
of the behavior of plates and shells In fluida, and the effect
of croop of the material is considered. A numboi- of papers
discuss problems associated with the devolOpmant of effective
mathematical methods for solving problems in the theory of shells.
Some of the reports propose algorithms for the solution of problems
