SOURCH: Leningrad. Universitet. Problemy firiki stmosfery, no. 3, 1965, 24-47
TOPIC TAGS: spectral albedoo spectrophotometric property, shortwave range, long-
wave range, chlorophyll, absorption band
ABSTRACT: The spectral albedo of natural grounds was measured by special Instruments
The program of measurements was so planned that changes of spectral albedos might be
detected at various typical grounds. Measurements were carried out above fields of
lucerne in the Odessa region, above crop fields in the Poltava region, above clover
and lupine fields and water surface In Lithuania, and above snow, asphalt, and con-
crete in the Leningrad region. All observation data were divided Into three classes
according to their spectrophotometric properties. The albedo of the first class in-
creased from the short-wave range to long waves. Soils, roads, and other free sur-
faces are included in this class. The second class of albedo has a maximum from
500 to 560 mU and a ~dnimum from 650 to 6W mis in the visible spectral range. The
albedo attained great values in the range from 730 to 1000 mU, Vegetation covers
formcd this albedo class. The third albedo class consisted of snow and water surd-

faces, and was characterized by elight variability. Two kinds of albedas were com-
puted: A, from mean reading data symmetrical to true noon and A as mean values
derived from three meteorological readings. Herbages cove;ed witi soft vegetation
have similar spectral albedos within the range from 420 to 900 au and an Increase of
spectral albedo within the interval of 420-550 su. At 700 mu a sudden sharp In-
crease occurs whink attains 1ti*-u&x1mu* in the 720-1000-so interval. Soft And
dense herb;g;,*,of.grass and cabbage have the absorption lines of chlorophyll, but
surfaces o en ng corn and sunflowers have no chlorophyli a6sorption bande. he
change of spectral albedo depends upon the phase of vegetation. The albedo of a
snow surface to unstable and depends upon the physical state of the snow and Luumi-
nation conditions. The albedo of a water surface changes slightly depending upon
the wavelength. Orig art. has: 11 figures and 5 tables. (901

A&'.TRACT: . The article present@ preliminary results on the correlation of the
extroction copselty of neutral organophoophorus extraction reagents with their
structure. The sigma constant, vh1ch Nikolayev at al. derived from the
ionization constants of phosphorus acids in 1956, using the Hammett equation,
was used to characterize the influence of oubstituentb. The presence of a
linear relationship between the effective extraction constants and sums of the
sigma constants was demonstrated with a correlation coefficient of 0.994. The
correlation of the sigma constants with the 41strIbutlon coefficients van
studied for the extraotton of ureall nitrate *ad plutonium (IT wA VI) nitrate'

by orgenophosphorus compoun4s (approximately 30 extraction reagents) unier various
conditions. A linear relationship vne found to exist betveen the logarithm of
the distribution coefficients and sums of the sigma constants of the substituents
on the phosphorus atom, obeyed by esters of phosphoric, mono- and dialkyl-
.pbo9phInIc acids, trinlkylphosphine oxides, and dialkyl phoaphiteo. The linear
relationship found was better satisfied by the diatrIbution coefficients In
'extroction from neutral and moderately acidic solutions. Chiefly compounds
Containing isopropyl and toobutyl radicals to the eater groups or at the phosphorus
atom satisfactorily obey the liaeor relationship. A linear relationship to also
obeyed by the maximum values of the distribution coefficients for each extraction
reagent. The distribution coefficients deterained In extraction experiments are
functions of several variables, Including the eqnstents of complex formation,
salt formation (in acid media), hydration constants, and particular distribution
.coefficients of the substances participating In the equilibrium. From the fact
that the logarithm of the distribution coeffIctents are linear functions of
the *us of the algae constants of the substituentep It follows that the particular
distribution coefficients obey the Hamett equation in the cases considered. The
correlations of the distribution coefficients of uranyl and plutonium. nitrates for
organophosphorus extraction reagents with the values of the sum of the sigra constanto-
of the substituents on the phosphorus atom are tabulated for 24 extraction systems.

ABSTRACT: The properties of polyamide coatings,Kibtained by closely related methods :

to steel is achieved when the particle size of nylon is in the 200-270 P range (see,

,ABSTRACTt This is a continuation of earlier work by the author deal-
Ing with gravitation radiation (Astronom zb. v. 42, no. 5, 1965),
where it was estimated that the most powerful source of gravitation
radiation (binary star type W UMa) produces a radiation (100 erg/tec)
whose energy is only five orders of magnitude smaller than the optical
,radiation from the galaxy. This article discusses the possibility

!of registering this radiation by means of the torsional frictionless

;pendulum described in the earlier paper. A formula is presented.for
!the calculations,, in which no use is made of the pseudotensor of the
~energy of the gravitational field, so that the shortcomings connected,
iwith this concept are eliminated. The calculations show that the rms
:displacement of the pendulum for the neighboring stars IBoo and WZ
4,:Sge is 6 x 10- 16 cm, which is close to the presently measurable dis-

10 10 cm. The results would provide a check on
itbe existence of gravitation waves. Orig. art. has: 3 formulas.
