Since firing of ceramic tiles im saggers requires special shops and
significant labor which increases its cast of p~oductiou by 10 - 1I%~
a sagger-less methnd of firing ceramic ti/es in tunnsl furnaces
(extensively used in such countries as Czechoslovakia~ Germany~
Eungary, etc.~ and to same extent by the domestic imdustry) is
considered. For this purpose, a series of tests ~ere conducted
in 19~5 by the Losev~;kiy Collective TLle Factory ia ~k~rkov

cooperatiom with employees of the Scientific Research Institute

A trend is noted in Czechoslovakia to use the m~thod of half-dry
pressing in the mnufacture of facing ar~ floor tiles. Exterior
tiles are being made with both glazed and rough finishes. Figures
are ~lveu of popular dimensions: 250 x 40 m~, 250 x 65 ~, 150 x 150 mn,
200 x 200 mm, 300 x 15 m~ and 30 x 300 mm. The table shows materials
used: marble, feldspar, unwashmd kaolins quartz, iron oxide, zinc o~des
tin oxide ard barium carbonate with percentages shown for transparent

The burning of sewer pipes is carried out in periodical fumu~a=
ce~ in the. Khartkov.works. The. dim~nsions of such & furnace are;
9 m. of length, ~ m of width, and 3 m of height. The furnace
12 semiga~, firings, viz. 6 om each side. (Fuel.. Donets. Goal t..ype
D).. The tubes are burnt according to the scheme in figure i, in
which case the cycle lasts for 90 hours, 36 of which for burning
and 5~ hours for cooling. The maximum bur~uing-temperatu~e amcunts
to from. llSo to 1_I8o�. For some time. the wur~s: operated witk clays
from the collecting plac~ Chasov-yarskoye, which were .,.,ecl eith~
pures or mixed with 3o to 4o0/0 of clay~ from the collecting pla~
Artemca, ka quantitative composition: 700/o clay and 300/o chamotte,
The tubes were of aatis�a~ory Quality with a minimum of waste.

Recently' the works were obliged to. pass over to th~ use of omlF
clays-from the collecting place of Artemovsk w~tch resulted in
a substantial increase of the burning scrap. The principal kinds
of the scrap were: fine, scarcely perceptibla cracks (14. to 15�/o
of the produ~tion~ determinable only by their hollow sound~ as .
well a~ bubble~ and ~wellinEs (7 to 8�/o). The high content of
quartz sand shouli be considered a characteristic feature of the
clays~ from ArtemovSk which is bha main cause fo:~ +..he large, quart=
tity of scrap. It i~ known from data from literature. (G. N, Du=
deters reference I) that the rate of cocting of sintered cer.amic
masses, she ~ul~ not exceed' 15� per hour. As may be seen from flg~e
L (curve. k), it remounts however up to 3oe. A dependence seen from
figure 2 consists between the rate of cooling within the temper~=
ture interval of from 750 to 500� and the quar~ity of waste
(cracks). It may consecf~ent.3~ be determined that the cooling
curve of the works for clay~ from the collecting place Chasov-
yarskoye is not adequate for clays, from Artemov~k..A new rational
cooling curve (figure l, curve 2) was developed, which reduced
the form~ion~ of cracks eubgtanti ~ally. The ~e~ ,~ng bubbl~'-, end
swmllin~s are formed by vioI?-tior~ of the heating re~ima of the
prod~cts~ a~ well ss by a wrong gas-milie~. The formaticn cf

Burning of $iles in chauber furnaces is exclusively
carried out in molds, whereby the unproductive
expenditures involved exceed ~0)~ of the production
costs ct tiles� Both weight and volume of the molds

could thus be utilized (Fig ~). The advantage offered
by burning piles without molds is the considerable
decrease in deformation of the products, a deficiency,
however, is the pasting of the single tiles, but this
can be prevented by carefully cleaning the tile
surfaces after pressing. Table ~ shows the results
obtained by ezamining such a combined burning proce~s~
By using the zetal container (Fig 2), the conveyance
of raw tiles and their placing in the furnace chamber
is facilitated� Table 2 shows the technical and
economical advantace~ of the combined burning method~
The adoption of it by the k~.ar'kovskiy zavod mettakhs-
kikh plitok (Khar'kov Factory for"Ketlach" Tiles)
was calculated to cause an yearly saving of 620 O00
Roubles. This method is recom~ended to ali those
factories that are equipped with chamber furnaces.
