In order to investigate the development of the paranasal sinuses the autho- exa-
mined tomogcaphically the sinuses of children aged 9 months to 15 yr. Tomo-
grams, which have not hitherto been usee for this purpose, revealed details which
were not seen in ordinary serial X-ray examinations. When estimating the value of
la, r pictures the author took into consideration the entire course of development
of sinuses from their origin until complete aeration. Well developed frontal sinus-
es were found sometimes in 3-year-old children. but generally not before the age
of 6 yr. In their primitive form of development maxillary antra were encountered
as early as toward the end of the first year of age. whereas complete aeration ap-

peared between the age of 8 and 10. Fully developed anterior and posterior eth-
m()jdal colls were seen in the 2nd and 3r~ years, respectively. The primitive form
()f development in the sphenoidal sinuses was observed between the ages of 2 and
14 yr. Apart from ilirowing light on interesting physiological proi,lenl'i tolno-
grams reveal more details in pathological cases, thus allowing a more precise
diagnosis and more adequate appreciation of the pathological processes In the si-
