TITLE: Investigation of Selectivity of Type PK fuses

ABSTRACT: An analytical derivation is given of a formula for calculating the
minimum ratio between the cross -sections or rated currents (In) of silver
plated fuses of type PK series -connected quartz-filled fuse holders. Average
design curves are presented of rated-current ratios and cross-section ratios
plotted against the ratio of the short-circuit current to the rated current; the
curves are compared with experimental data. Most fuses function selectively
if the ratio of the short-circuit current to the rated current is under 3,000 and
if 1. of the series -connected fuses differ by two steps, if the diameter of the
fusible element is true witha tolerance no better tha-n+ 0.001 cm, a three-step
difference is needed. To prevent aging of the silver-plated fuse, its

temperature should not exceed 500-6000C when the short-circuit is cleared bv
the other series -connected fuse.
