TITLE: Mechanical properties of welds at low temperatures

TEXT: The II Krajowa Konferencja Wytrzym4-sciowa SITO (All-Country Confer-
ence on Material Strength of the Associat-on of Polis~ Mechanical Engineers
and Technicians) was convened in Warsaw on June 12-14, !961. The report on
research task No.Id-12, "Investigations oil mechanical properties of 'low car-
bon welds at low temperatures" was read at this conference. The purpose cf
this research carried out at the Instytut Spawalnictwa, (Welding insti'ute)
was to investigate the influence of low temneratures on mechanical proper-
ties of low-carbon weld joints. The investigation included impact, bending,
and 0tension strength tests. All tests were carried out at t20, 0, -20 and
-40 C, using C02 dissolved in alcohol for coolant. The samnles were cut out
along and across the rolling direction from 20 mm thick steel sheet. Twu
types of steel were used: the St52, containing 0.20~/. C, 1.06% tin, 0-45% Si.

electrodes we-. used for welds on St52 steel and EP52--28P and EP49-29P
electrodes on St3S steel. Results of tests were plotted on graphs reproduc-
ed in the article. They show that the impact strength,of St52 steel Cut
along the rolling di-rection is of the order of 5 kg/cm' at -400C and ircrea-
ses to 10-11 kg/CM2 as temperature rises to t200C; the impact strength at
-400C in samples cut across the rollinE, direction is about 4 kv//cm2, and
increases insignificantly with irowing temperature. The val-ues for St '~S
steel are about 1 kg/CM2 at -406C and 11-12' kg/CM2 at -200C for samriles cii,
along the rolling di 5ection, while for cross cut samples the impact stren-th
;,s less than 1 kg/em at -400C and increases to only 4-5 kg/-Il,2'_-t 200C.
Bending tests of welded joints were carried out on a hydraulic ZD111k 30t
machine designed for tension and compression testc of metal samples at
temperatures ranging from -600 to i-1000C and manufactured by t-.e VE-7, 'Herk-
stoffpruefmaschinen Leipzig (SZG), Samples for these tests were prepar,_d
from the same types of steel and electrodes as described above, with dou-.,Ie

ABSTRACT: Comprative studies were performed on the thermal decomposition of
nitrocallulosi\vith the use of so= arylamines, phenols, aromatic hydrocarbons, and
their nitro derivatives as inhibitors. The polarographic and spectrophotametric

Abstract: (Authors' English summary modified] Authors report
a case of Kartagener triads, pigmentary degeneration of the
retina, and congenital cataract. They review briefly the
literature of this problem, and note that the changes ob-
served in this syndrome are always due to developmental di-
fficulty or degenerative changes, and may therefore have com-
mon pathological elements with the classical symptoms of the
Kartagener triads. Ihore are 21 references, about evenly di-
vided between Polish. German. and Western publications.
