ABSTRACT: Experiments were act up during the summer of 1963 In Yygeva, Estonian SSSR,
which to situated slightly south of Leningrad, to elucidate the characteristics of the diurnal
variation of solar radiation arriving on model inclined surfaces having different curvatures am
brientation. All measurements were carried out In agricultural fields for 23 days, during whic
7 days were clear. 6 days were cloudy, and the remaining 10 days had a partial cloud cover.
The albedo, values of the subjacent surface varied from 21 to 23%. A Yanishevskly pyranomet6l
was used to observe solar radiation. Global and dMuse radiation arriving c-- Inclined surfaces
with a curvature of 10,20,30,40,60, and 900 oriented In succession notthward, southward, sag

lar to the rays was measured by a thermoelectric Yanishevskly actinometer and then it was
used for converting the direct radiation arriving on an incline. The Investigattons revealed
that southern slopes with an angle of Inclination of 400 received the maximal quantity of global
radiation. The dependence of the arrival of global radiation on curvature of the incline is al-
most identical for conditions of a cloud-free sky, partial cloud cover, and clouds of the upper
level. Under conMow of a cloudy sky the arrival of global radiation onto slopes decreases
with density of the cloud cover. The dependence of diffuse radiatim of the elevation of the sim
is less evident. Some increase In radiation when the slopes are faced toward the sun Is caused
by an Increase of radiation reflected ft-om the horizontal surface. Orig, art, has: 3 tobles and,

TEXT: Methods of gamma-logging (GL) and neutron gamma-
logging (NGL) have obtained the widest application in the study
of wells drilled in oil and gas deposits, the method of gamma-
gamma-logging (GGL) being most used in investigating exploratory
coal boreholes. The method of KGL is used in investigating holes
drilled during prospecting for boron materiaig while the method

Issued: I / 1957
The present paper describes the method for the production of collimated pion
bundles which was developed In the euxmer of 1953- On this occasion the pole
shoes Of the electromagnet servo as the main protection against the direct radi-
ation Of the accelerator. Apart from the economic advantage offered$ the appli-
cation of pole shoes as protection &g&IU3t radiation permits a considerable in-
crease of.the operation surface for Investigations. In the 6 m phasatron of the
Institute for Nuclear Problems of the Academy of Science in the USSR the proper-
ties of'sesone.are investigated on bundles which are led out not only through
and between the pole shoes, but also through a specially built "principal con-
crete protection" of the phanotron. However, this concrete protection in compar-
atively far away from the chamber of the-accelerators and therefore the meson
bundles led through the pole shoos are more intense than the bundles led out
through the principal concrete protection.

The present report contains an exact discussion of the results obtained by
A.I. MUCKM, L.B. O&ROV, B. PUNThKGRVO ( report of the Institute for Nuclear
Problems of the Academy of beiences of tho Ub.-iR, 1955, lectures delivered on the

concerning the scattering described in the above title. Measuring was carried out
by means of scintillation counters. The bundles of positive pions were produced by
the bombardment of a polyethylene target by the proton bundle leaving the synchro-
cyclotron. The corresponding reaction is p + p -+ ff+ + d.
Test order: For measuring angular distributions a &RENKOV detector and liquid-
scintillation-counters were used, which were connected in coincidence for the
registration of positive pions inciding upon the hydrogen target. The total cross
sections of the interaction between positive pions and hydrogen were measured from
the decrease of intensity of the meson bundle passing through the hydrogen scatterer.
There follows a discussion of measurements carried out.
Measuring results: Measuring results are shown in tables. The differential cross
3ections in the laboratory system and in the center of mass system and, in addition,

the processes of meson-nucleon scattering are probably no longer well described by
b- and F-waves alone. The importance of the contribution made by D-waves will be
evaluated later. A further table contains the coefficients of the angu-Lar distribution
which were found by means of the method of the smallest squares; angular distribution
was approximated by a function with 5 free parameters.
Also the values of the total cross sections were shown together in a tabie. In a dia-
gram the curves of the energy dependence of the total cross section 13t )
obtained by the decrease of intensity of the bundle as well as of the cross sections
obtained by integration of the differential cross sections are compared with one another.
Agreement is good and a certain deviation was found oniy at 200 MeV.

The present work at first deals with the results obtained by measuring the
cross sections d of the nonelastic collisions between negative pions and
Be-, C-9 CU- and'fb-nuclei in the energy interval of from 140 to 400 MeV
and then discusses then in connection with the corresponding total cross
ections d,. The nonelastic cross sections were measured by measuring the
ttenuation of the meson bundle passing through a scatterer by the method of
:
cintillation counters. Measuring results are shown in a table. The necessary
:orrootions are discussed. A diagram illustrates the found energy dependence
of the nonelastic cross sections and compares them with the nonelastic cross
actions measured previously by means of scintillation counters at energies
N less than 140 MeT. The energy dependence of the nonelastic and total cross
"actions of these nuclei in general reminds us of the energy dependence of
the total cross sections of the scattering of pione by hydrogen and deuteri-
um. At energies of from 100 to 250 MeV the cross sections depend only
slightly an energy, but above 250 VeV cross sections diminish comparatively
quickly. Also at energies below 100 MeV cross sections diminish compara-
tively quickly. d t and a.. attain their maxiallm within that energy domain

(- 190 MeV), in which also the total cross sections of the scattering of
pions by hydrogen and deuterium attain their maxima. For th urpose of do-
terzining data concerning the energy dependence of the rang: ~ - f(E) the
here obtained data on dne were analyzed (on the basis of the optical model).
The here obtained ranges are shown in a diagram and corresponi at all
energies to the nonelastic cross sections of Be and C. The range may be com-
puted also from the data on the cross sections of interaction between pions
and fret nucloonol a corresponding formula is given. The ranges determined
by these two methods agree with one another at energies of more than 200 MeT.
Therefore, pious probably enter into interaction with the individual nucleons
of the nucleus. The computed and measured energy dependence of the total
croon section are In good agreement. From the analysis of the here discussed
results it follows that the optical model, if suitable parameters are used
(which were computed from the mechanism of the one-nucleon interaction of
mesons with nuclei) describes the energy dependence of the total and non-
elastic cross sections for Be, C, Cu and Pb at from 140 to 400 MeV satis-
factorily. From the Y lues of 6 t and dno it is possible to obtain data con-
cerning nuclear dimen:ions.

This work
)~the continuation of A.I.MUCHIN et al., lurn.eksp.i teor.fis,22,
371 1955 investigates the data on the scattering of positive mesons with
and without the condition that the contribution made by D-states towards
scattering be very small. If D-states are neglected, interaction occurs only
in S- and P-states (S-P-analysis), but if they are not neglected, S-P-D-
analysis is necessary. The latter condition is sensible in the case of ener-
gies of - 300 MeV. If S-, P-, and D-waves participate in the scattering of
positive pions, it is found that, in addition to the three phase shifts
a39a31 and a33 (which characteri3e interaction in the S-, P1/2 and P3/2-
state with the isotopic spin 3/2) also the phase shifts 633 and 635 (which
correspond to the D-states with the total angular momentum 3/2 and 5/2) are
different from zero.
Some conclusions drawn from this work and from the previous work cited above:
The phase shifts a33 are practically equal in the case of S-P- and S-P-D-
analysis. a 33 probably passes through 900 at an energy of > 176 MeV. The
V

values obtained for a3are incompatible with OREARIS equation a 3.-O,11-f~ at
energies of 240, 270, and 307 MeT. However, this equation is well suited for
low energies if data are described only by a31 a31 and a33' However, in con-
sideration of the data for 307 MeV an S-P-D-analysis is hardly necessar*or
describing the data obtained here. The "optimum" values of the phase a3l
become regular at energies 0) 200 MeV of the mesons. a 31 is negative and
apparently remains below 10 up to 310 MeV. a31 becomes smaller if data are
expressed by 5 phase shifts. The "optimum" phase shifts of the D-waves 6 J3
and 635 are positive and negative respectively. With increasing energy t e
phases tend towards an increase. In 5-P-D-analysis the values of the S-phase
a3decrease considerably in comparison to the corresponding values obtained
by S-P-analysis. If the possible contribution made by D-waves is taken into
account a depends linearly or nearly linearly on the momentum of the meson
up to 3;0 ieV. The radius of meson-nuoleon interaction in any case amounts to
e~ 7.10 14 cm, no matter whether 5- and F-waves suffice for describing scattering
or not. The real part of the amplitude of scattering in a forward direction ob-
tained from the causality conditions is in good agreement with its description
by the phase shifts up to 310 NeV.

vol 35, Nr 2, pp 340-347 (USSR)
For the investigation of the asymmetry of electrons produced
during the decay of polarized g-meaons the authors developed
an experimental system which is described in the following
The n-meson bundles used for the experiments are from a
synchrocyclotron, the energy of the u-mesons amounted to
-80 MeV, and intensity amounted to 100 mesons/cm 2seb.,Me
experimental arrangement consisted of a shielding wall, a
collimator with a beryllium filter in the gap, before it the
two monitor counters (between the counters there is a
olyethylene filter of 10 cm thickness), the graphite target
with magnetic shield), and of a telescopic arrangement of
t
scintillation counters with CH2- filters~ The results

obtained by the investigations (u-g-e-decay) are
represented in form of 2 diagrams, (Figure 3 shows
the absorption of the electrons originating from the decay
of unpolarized g -mesons; figure 4 shows the dependence of
the asymmetry-coefficient on electron energy). The
qualitative results of the energy dependence agree (with a
margin of some few ~6) with those predicted, by the two-component
neutrino theory, The degree of polarization of the p-mesons
was determined as amounting to 0,81+0,11 There are 4

ABSTRACT: After the discovery of the nonconservation of parity in the case
of weak interaction (Refs 1, 2) the results of a number of
investigations ofa-e-decay were published, which were carried
out partly by means of electronic particle recording (Refs 3, 4)
and partly with photoomulsions (Refs 5, 6). In 1957 reports
were published concerning also investigations carried out-by
means of hydrogen- ("Lef 7) and propane bubble chambers
(Refs 8, 9). The advantages and disadvantages of these methods
are discussed in short in the introduction. The authors of the
present paper also used a propane bubble chamber for the purpose
Card 1/4 of recording particles. The present paper intends to investigate

positron asymmetry in the reaction 4-;+-e+. The asymmetry
found by the authors turned out-to be considerably less than
that found by other research workers. (Refs 4, 10, 11), who had
also used propane fo'r their work. The difference is explained by
the difference in the purity of the propane used. A scheme of
the experimental arrangement usod is shown by figure 1. The
670 Mev proton beam emitted from the synchrocyclotron penetrates
a lead shield and is focused by quadrupole lenses; behind a
further shield is the polyethylene target in which the ir;f-mesons
are produced. According to the thickness of this target (70 or
30 cm), the li~'-moson beam deviates from the primary proton beam
by 7 or 300, and the ir -mesons have an energy of 170 or 273 Mev.
Behind a further shield, the meson beam is electromagnetically
deflected and penetrates a steel collimator, which is let in
to the window of the 4 m-concrete shield, which is lined with
cast iron plates. The beam finally reaches a filter (at 170 Mev
made from 29 cm Al, at 273 Mev 15.5 cm Cu) and finally
penetrates into the bubble chamber, which is screened off by
means of double-layer. iron. The tracks of the charged particles

fitted with a "Yupiter-11" lens (F= 5.24 cm). The chamber was
filled with technical propane (80/1.' propane, 10,,4. propylene,
611'fo methane, 4% butane); the normal operational conditions of the
chamler were: 620C, primary pressure 32 atm, expansion 2.6~. .
About 5000 stereophotographs were taken. All plates were twice
investigated. As a result of the first investigation, 6712
cases of 1;,-- e and 1A - e -decays (as well as some
doubtful cases) were found, and the second disclosed an
additional number of 346 such cases. Figure 3 shows the angular

obtained by the investi--ation of the angular distribution of
positrons from the Ir -1A.- 0 decay f( 41) in 5252 cases is
shown by figure 6; figure 7 shovis the corresponding result for

by means of scintillation counter experiments (Fig 9) in order
to find the reason for the lov, a-value. It was found to be due
to the difference in the degree of propane purity.

ABSTRACT: The transf-jr of muons to only excited levels of a Zp-mesi6
atom with further cascade transition of the system to the ground
state, followed by emission of a X-mesic x-ray series, which can be
useful in the study of reverse mesic-atom, processes that occur in
compounds or mixtures containing hydrogen, was investigated by com-
paring the intensities of the K series from manic atom of carbon,
-produced when negatively charged muons, a7re stopped in carbon (graph-
ite'i and in polyethylene (CH2). The data indicate that if it is as-

sumed that the probabilities of the muons landing on C and H are
proportional to their charges, then the muons which jump over from
the proton to the carbon in the cascade transitions give a X-mesic
x-ray series whose intensity is 0.98 0.03 of the intensity occurring
.in the case of direct landing of the muons on the carbon. "The
