ABSTRACT: On a powerful spectrograph with a crystal-bending radius of 500 mw
recording
and a tube for the
of X-ray spectra of samples subjected
to high temperatures, it was possible, by the method of priznar7 exci-
tation, at 10000 and with an oscillating crystal, to obtain andasicn
lines of the Kp-group of pure chromium and iron as well as of' Fe-Cr
alloys with 4, 5, 8, 20, 30, 45, 50 and 75% chromium content. It is
shown that the transition of chromium and ima to the Fe-Cr alloy In
the alloy-co=onent-conoentration domain under investigation as well
as the transition of ther-composition along the axis into &ncK,-solid
solution exercises no influence (within the limits of measuring er--
rors) upon the position of the maxim of FeKp,-, FaKp 5 - and C:,K~1-
lines. It is shown that -the CrKP -band maxim= is shifted in -the di-

whereas the shortwave edge of the OrKp 5-band i9 shifted in the direo-
tion of the shortwavo aide with tin Increase of iron concentration
and attains the lovmst values within the central domain of the com-
ponent conoentration of Iron-chromium alloys. It iq further shown
thiat the oonductivity width of b&nd and the number "n" of the "ex-
terior" electrons differ per atom in the case of all alloy =Tponent
concentrations with the exception, as it seems. of two, i.e.chromium
and iron. In the central domain of concentration of chromium-iron
alloy components they attain their minirmim value in iron and thejl.r
maxtum value in chromium. Modifications of the width of the K~ 5 ..band
of chromium and iron, as well as the position of the shortwave bdge
of the chromium band points in the direction of a ocmplicated modifi-
cation of the electron structure of chromium- and iron atoms in Fe-Cr
alloys with the component-concentration modification of Fe-Cr alloys.
It is shown that the tmnsition of the. r-composition along the a-x:Ls
into an(k-solid solution is characterized in iron by a considerable
modification of the course of T max (kinetic electron energy in the

ABSTRACT: The a --+ 0 phase transformation of' Fe-Cr a'loys is of high.
interest because of the changed structure c~f the crystal
lattice and the modification of different 1hysical properties
occux-ring in connection with it. These modifications are
connected with modified energetical conditions of the atom
electrons of t-ie alloy component. The investig-tion of Vne
modification cf the fine structure of X-ray spEctral lines -
caused by transitions of electrons from ext,aricr energetic bands
to tte K-level - offers an insight into the chEracter of tte
c-phase, the mechanism of the a ---* a phase -.ransition and _nto
the physical )roperties. In the present paper investigations

alloys are described. Similar investigations, namely of
K-absorption spectra of the K -group of chromium and iron
of a Fe-Cr alloy with 52,38% Rf iron were carried out by
Kazantsev (iefs 1,2), yet the weak linear dispersion of the
spectrograp~i applied did not pernit a cle-ir interpretation
of the results. The authors of the present paper investi~rated
Fe-Cr alloy.3 with 35,L) and 55 % by weigh*,; of chromium; very
pure Cr and Fe was obtained by electrolyt.'cal methods, the alloywas
homogeneously tempered in a vacuum hJgh-f reqt.ency furnace at

ABSTRACT- rhe aim of the present xfork was to establish characteristic
changes in the structure of the electron energy spectrum
due to the addition of nickel and iron-chromium alloys.
The following alloys were used: Fe-Cr (5556 Fe),
Fe-Cr-Ni (58-4% Fe and 15.4% Ni). The nickel wan electro-
lyti.cally pure and the other compo.ments were of a "high
degree of purity'". The inirestigatLon was -tarried out with
the aid of a quartz crysta'L (R = 50 cm) X-ray apectro-
graph (compare Ref 1) K 0 lines of Cr, Fe and Ni (due to
transitions from the condaction baad of the K-lovel)
together with the shortwave K,111 satellite, and
K lines (due to the tranSitions from the 3p-shell

Alloys
of the K levels) together with the long trave KV
satellite 0were investigated. Thase lines were obtained
at 1 000 C for the elemonts tak,Bn separately of the
above alloys. The K P lines fo;r Fe and Ni were recorded
in the fourth order and the Cr lines in the third order.
The corresponding disperttion was 3.88 A/nun (Cr),
2.44A/mm (Fe) and 3.03 A/mm (Ni). The resu_lt~s obtained
are shown in Tables land 2. It -was found that the width
of CrK 05 obtained for pure chramium increased with
temperature. In the magnetic transition region there was
a sharp increase in the width of FeK 95 (to 0.9 + 0.1 ev).
The position of FeK 05 remains unaltered. The a-3y
phase transformation is accompanied by a small change in
the Fermi energy. The Fermi energy for the Fe-Cr alloy
Card'2/3 is 0.19 v/R and 0.22 v/R for the Fe-Cr-Ni alloy.

LBSTRACT: Great interest is displayed for the phase transformation
a 46' of the ~Iloys of the system Fa-Cr, since a fundamental
change in the structure of the crystal lattice and the
physical properties take place along with this transformation.
The authors assume these transformationn ';o be related to a
change of the energy state of the electrols of the atoms in
individual alloy components. Invest1gations of the changes
of the X-ray spectral lines, espec4,ally t-,te transition of
electrons from the outer energy field to the K-level, are to
supply the fundaments for the understanding of the mechanism
of phase transformation and of the changes in physical pro-
Derties. Mention is made of investigations carried out by
Card 1/2 Kazantsev (Refs 1 and 2), which were not altogether successful

because of unsuitable experimental arrangetients. The pre-
paration of samples and their treatment .3re described, and
the K-lines of pure iron and pure chromiam, taken in tuo
microphotograms at 10000C, are shown. The zomputed values of
the width of the K-band of chromium aed iron in various alloy
compositions at a tem?erature of 1000 C ara shown in table 2,
and the computed values of the Fermi energies and of the
energies of the 3d band are given, taking Into account the
a,d andS phases. Both tables are discussed in detail, and a
diagram (Fig 3) is plotted with the respecl;ive data, depicting
the superimpositions of the energy fields of chromium and iron
in Fe-Cr alloys. It is shown in this conne(tion that in the
mean range of' the conoentration of both (.-omponents the energy
of the 3d band of iroii exhibits a mininium, and that of chromium
a maximum. There are 5 figures, 4 tables. and 3 Soviet refer-
ences.

TEXTs The present article is a reproduction of a lecture delivered at
the th All-Union Conference on X-Ray Spectroscopy (Rostov-na-Donu,
June 29 - July 6, 1559 ). Lbove all, the authors-point out that a number
of tables on X-ray spectra available qt present are incorrect because they
do not take into account the relation 1'#kX - 1.00203 A (e.g., Refs. 2-6)
although they have been issued after 1,047. The deviations are illustrated
by some examples. The table on p. 393 contains the A-values in X-units
for the Kal lines of some elements, the tabulated energy values in
rydbergs9 and the energy values computed from the fo.-Mula 3 - 1/AR
R - Rydberg conatant). In determining the photon energy an error occurs
which Is the hi,gher the higher the photon energy E. The correct

formula for computing these energies is log E(Ry) -- 5.9587650 - 109A

following, details are chosen from some papers mentioned - e.g., details
on the K-level of copper (Ref3- 4, 6) - and It is demonstrated that the
deviations may be partly very high. The conaluaions to be drawn from the
investigations of the authors are summarized as followst 1) The data on
X-ray photons and spectral atsorption edges given in the tables available
at present. should be revised with special regard to the most recent data
on physical constants. 2) It was found necessary to recalculate the
electron level terms, using the state of the) neutral atom as zero point
of the energy scale. 3) It in necessary for X-ray spectroscopy to set
up new tables which take int,) account the facts discussed by the authors.

TEM In order to determine the niAmber of 3-d electrons for atoms in the
iron group, the author studied the characteristic cianges that occur in
the energy spectrum of electrons of Fe-Co alloys when the Co concentration
is changed in of- -- - phase transitions and in trans'.tions above the Curie
point. The resulting change in electron structu-.e %.'fects the X-ray
emission band parameters. The integrEil band in,enr~i.y was measured by
a photographic method already described by the Author (Ivv. AN SSSR, ser.
fiz., 25, no. 6 (1961)). The K,,-linea for Fe And Co were examined in
the'temperature range 250-12500C, and for Fe-Co alloys in the range
550-12001C. Results& (1) In. the case of Fe, no change occurs in the

integral intensity during them - y transition or on passing the Curie
point. The first result indicates that no change in electron structure
attends the q - I-transition. The second result might be explained either
by d-s electron transitions or by a change in transition probability.
(2) For Fe-Co alloys, a change in the integral intensity of the
FeK ~5 and CoK,,5 bands for alloys containing 409 of Co is observed at high
temperatures, indicating differences in the electron structure of alloys
with a higher and lorfer Co content. This is conbistent with the
photon-energy values. (3) These values point to two effects; (a) an
aggregate displacement of the maximiza energies for Fe and CaK,
5 5
attendant upor. changes in concentration of the components and due to
phase and magnetic transitions; (b) a displacement of tho maximum of the
X, line depending on the concentration of alloy components. There

precision of the measurements. In general, the values for the intensities
of the, satellites are higher thorn those given in piblications tTable 2).
The dependence of the integral intensity of the K 05 band on thE atomic
number shcws that with increaziinp Z the electron structure undergoes a
considerable change which is accompanied~by a redistribution of the
electron states, leading to a change in the trrz.nSition probabilities.
When iron, cobalt or nickel PUSS into the paramagnetic state t1eir K 05
bands broaden by about 0.4 ev and the maximum shifts about 0.3 ev toward
lower energies. The relatively high asymmetry indices of the E., and K a2
lines of V, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu (between 1.0 (OK a2' V) and 1.5 (PE. a19 Fe))
are attributed to exchange interaction between the 3d electronr and inner
2)p electrons. This type of interaction splits the 2p levels into two
closely adjacent sublevels. Tnere are 2 figures and 4 tables.

of two 150,000 kw, 3,006 rpm, 170 atm, 5500C turbines
of the SIrK-150-1 type, manufactured by the Leningrad
Metal Plant. The design defects and changes made
during the operation are explained. Tables and curves
show temperature and time data. The work of feeders
and steam conduits is discussed in detail. The necessity
for further improvement of the unit design is emphasized.

Abstract A control group of horses (2 horses) received during 60
days a ration which consisted of- five kilograms of hay,
4.75 kilograms of oats, 0.5 kiloixams of fodder-br4-quets,
3 kilogram of straw, and 30 grams of salt. IL. the se-
cond group (2 horses) during a week the oats were replaced
by crushel corn kernels. In the third gro-al; (4 horses)
oats were replaced by corn kernels. The corn feed e-id not
