The author develops numerical integration formulae which he then .applies to obtaining numerical solutions of nonhomogeneous, constant coef- linear differential equations. He states various theoreas concern- ing the order of magnitude of error of his solutions and asserts that the procedures can be carried out on a digital computer with the aid of standard subroutines. A sorption vacuum pump which contains a vessel with alkali metal used as a getter,, and a means for cleaning the metal. The pump is simplified and purification of the alkali metal from volatile impurities is facilitated while simultaneously increasing the rate of evacuation of the pump by using a metal diaphragm as the means for purification of the alkali metal. This diaphragm covers the vessel so that only the alkali metal can escape. 2. A modification of this pump in which the diaphragm is made from stainless steel. 3. A modification of this pimp in which the diaphragm is made from titanium. Card 1/2 UDC: 533. 1-vessel with alkali metal; 2-diaphragn SUB CODE: 13, 1l/ SUBM DATE: llMay65 I Card I ! , ; r j .11 1 ~ . In'the first series of experiments. =Lee and guinea pigs were subjected to vertical vibration with froquenct's 35 and 70 cps and an &aptitude of 4 a=. The duration of the exp:r*L" meats was 15-60 min. A frequency of 700 cps with an amplitude of - 0.005 an lasting 60 at* was also tried. Two hour# after the ftrat-il exposure to vibration, serotoaLa content was lowered. In general. throughout the expertiseat was 689 lower than to L 38,546-65 ACCEMOR HRt APS009650 Control animals. In nice exposed to 15 cps far 15 min. the serotonin covtent returned to normal after one day. However. In nice exposed to 70 and 700 cps for 60 mLni the level remained low for up to six days after exposure. CarulopLasmin activity was generally unchanged in most ~Srkitxals'exposed to vibration, except for one group expos- ed to 30 cps for I hr. In this group, serotanin activity increased by a factor of 4 compared to the control level. In the second me- Iries.mice were subjected to 10- and 30-g accelerations for 5 and 30 min. A 10-g acceleration for 5 min produced a lowered serotanin content 2 hr after exposure. The decrease lasted up to six days af- ter exposure at a level ILZ lower Chan in control animals. Upon ex- posuce to 10 g for 30 min, sarotoatn content was not lowered until the 6th day. Geruloplasmin activity w&s.cut in half during the first Z hr after exposure and returned to normal levels 4 hr later. One to six days afterwards. activity was Z.S-4 times greater than in the control group. Sxposure to 30 g for 5 min produced, these same of- facts:with the exception of~ coruloplasato activity which Increased 2 hr rafter exposure. In the third serit$# StC*# COittg gainsai pigs,. dogeg;aod spas waris irradiated with 800, 900, 6000 and 540 r. Zleven &pas exposed to 540 r showed lowered serotGaIn content up to the L 3851"5 ACCESSION '$go AP50096550 16th day (death) after exposure. Of 45 dogs exposed to 600 r, 42 died. Seratonin content In these animals decreased up to death (15 days). Of particular Interest was the reaction of nice and rat to gamma irradiation. In thesp. animals. an contrasted to guinea Pigig dogs, and sipest 50% of the total serotontn content was In the skin. This difference was attributed to the fact that unlike mice and rate, guinea pigs, dogs, and apes are Inclined to react homor- rhagically to irradiation. In the fourth sorLe.s dogs more exposed to the conbLned action of acceleration or vibration and ionizing radiation. These animals were exponed to vibration (70 cps. 0.4%m0 60 min) or accelerction (8 g. 3 min) from 2 hr to I dny prior to cobalt-60 Irradiation (100r, 3.4 r1min), Accaleration.of 8 g, lasting for 3 min, performed 2 hr prior to irradiatiah sharply in- creased the level oi serotonin and ecruloplasmin activity for 2-7 days after irradiation, in contrast to the reaction to radiation a- lone. AcceLeratLon I day prior to irradiation had the same effect .as radLarion alone. Vibration 2 hr prior to irradiation did not &I_; f ter Via normal dynaaLce-of coruloplasain and seratonts Im Lrcadia tad snLaals.' to analyzing the results of these tests, It was not pos" sible to ost4blLsh a dependence between the magnitude of vibration 1" .3/4 r-L 3851"5 ACCESSION URI AP5009650 'd and radiation -***,,in the dynamics of changes In serotonLa content and-corutoploomin activity. In general, lowered serotonLn content in response to various stimulants depended upon the species of anir m4and Its individuaL peculiarities. The authors conclude that it is hard to speculate on the mechanisms leading to the lowering of serotouin content in animals because of thepaucity of other studies, of this kind. However, It is felt that the serotonin-ceruloplasmin 1 probe I* the most sensitive aeons for determining the biological *f-f fecC4 Of various sP4c0-flI8ht factors.
