modulator, a.c. amplifier and rectifier. The modulator is a magnetic voltage amplifier wrth a douhlc-freyuenc_y
output, permitting separate adjustment of modulus and phase in the a c. windings, and hence eyualrzatrun
of odd (uneven) harmonics. The modulator is fed from a semiconductor RC-generator of 8 5 kcs. At an
input voltage of about 4 to 5 Mv, the. amplifier has satisfactory linear characteristics. The output resistance
is 70 ohms, the sensitivity 10 microvo is and the voltage ampirlication 4000 volts. The amplifier rs designed
for a Load of 4000 ohms.

flame outer cone was cons:tdered where, in ~~on'~rast to the inner cone,
ionizatiar~ wa.s expected to be spatially ~ani.form. It was shotivn that
i~~hen a 1'l~ime is placed in an electric fi~el~d, I~harged layers form slang
the elec:trodea (see Fig. :t ); the thickne~gs of such layers depends upon
many factors. The condit:tona for producing a saturation current were

ion collector similar to that dErscrihed by M.V.~Babykin et al. (ZhETF, X16, 511, 1969)
The last was mounted in the rog:ion of ono of th~l~ magnetic mirrors and was so designed
that only ions with Larmor. radial exceeding a preset valu� could .reach the collecting
electrode. A small number of high energy charged particles (energies up to 5 keV)
~ were observed; those are ascribed to forn;ation of a plasmoid. in the conical plasma
gun during the first half-pericrl of the discharge. Most of the charged particles in
I the magnetic mirror machine hac'l energies of the order of 100 eV; the density of
pai�tbcles with energies between 20 and 200 eV decreased exponentially with a time
constant of 80-90 microsec. It is concluded that by means of external injection
(fast theta-pinch) a plasma with a density"of 1.013 eni 3 and an average charged part~-
cle enoruy of 100 eV can be obtained in a magnetic mirror machine in which the mag-
netic field strength is between 1 and 3 k0e, ar.~d that such plasma can be employed to

Kurtmullayev, Yu.Ye.NesterilShin, clnd A.G.Ponoma~renko (ZhETF, 47, No. S, 19134) . The
plasmas (ion density about 1013 cm-3) were produced with thc3 aid of a conical theta-
pinch. Approximately 0.1 cm3 of I)2 or Iie was aldmitt2c~ to the vacuum chamber and a
2 �I�' 20-40 ItY capacitor was dischlarged through tho ionizing winding sane 300-400
microsec later. Tho heats-d plasma entered the 150 cm long '16 em diameter region be-
tween the two magnetic mirrors (mirror ratio'+~ 1.4~ magnetic; field strength ~ 3 k0e) '~
through one of the mirrors, the field strength in which was lase than that in the
other by a factor of 1.3. Diagnc-sis of the plalama was effected with the aid of 0.4,
