Up to the and of 1966 only slabs, (150 iL 500 no) were cast, but later square (200 x 200 am) billets were cast. The authors point out the greater difficulties of casting square billets and mention that the productivity of the machine roll from 30-36 tons hr for the slabs to about 15 for 150 a 160 = square Billets- To maintain produetlvlty a mould for casting two billets almultaxissu* vM a two-stopper tundleb sorviggVe two-billot mould (Fig.5) was adopted (Figoolv6). below the mould Is a 7 a long "ean"ry cooling system (sprays) (Pig.7), and this Is followed by two stands of withdrawal rolls at 3 and 8 is Card 1/3 (FIg.3) below floor level and by the flamie-cuttino MV/130-60-10-6/18 Continuous casting of steel late ftuaro Bills%@. TITLE: Formation of Internal Defects in Square Cast R'llets DurIng Continuous Pouring of Steel PERIODICAL: Stall, 1960, Nr.3, pp 212-215 (USSR) ABSTRACT: Thia Is an investigation of the effect of the rate of pouring, reduction, secondary cooling, and other factors on formation of Internal defecto In continuously poured square cast billets with the pt;rpose of finding the causes of defects and methods for their eltmination. This investigation was conducted at Ithe Novotullskiy Metallurgical Plant (HINZ), with participation of plant personnel. The Investigated cast billets were of 200 x 200 mm cross section. The depth of liquid cavity and the "front of crystallizatf-on" were detemined by the methods of the Central Scientific Research Insti- tute of Ferrous Metallurgy (TsNIIChM), that is, by pouring in the lead and introducing radioacL!ve isotolpes Card I/B of sulphur and phosphorus. The Internal zones of longitudinal and transverse templets often allow some cracks. Depending on their location on cross section, these cracks (see Fig. 5) are divided Into corner cracks (Fig. 5,a), Intermediate cracks (Fig. 5,b) and apIder-like central cracks (Fig. 5,C). The extent to which the billets are affected by segregation streaks and cracks in the Intermediate zone are mainly determined by the amount of reduction produced by the rolls of pullIng stands, when the core of billets Is still liquid. The authors state that for Improvement of quality of continuously cast bil- lets the reduction of billets before their complete FO i'm -1 t, I u i io f' I t it i , vi vt ID % r~ , .. i, ;I I II i , i o~ , ( 8) 1 Y 9 Cast Dilleta D'it'Ing contlwi(~Ii.. of Steel design of crystalll;:era, but of the whole system below crystallizero.
