After a survey of shortcomingta ta the 4-year operaton
of,the blooming-slabbing mill at Alchevskiy zavrid
(Alchevsk-Plant) the following recommundationu were
made: (1) lengthening reeeiving roller table to allow
'repaiv of one.tongur-, crane while the aecond crane de-
livers ingots to a stationary manipulator. Originally,
''the roll6r table extended into the soakinE pit bay 3o
teat It could only be serviced by one crane at -a titric.
Tra4aferring manipulator from the mill line to the
tilting table is expedient; (2) disposal of trimmin&a

removal; (4) preparing and tzn1oad1rt;,; rzic-ta). In the samc

TITLEt Design of now continuous heating furnaces for thin strip mills
PERIODICALs Stallf no..4# 1961# 367 - 371
TEXTt Necessitated by the increasing capacity of thin strip mills,
the Stallproyekt designed a heating furnace. It has two up er fusion zones,
large-aspacity Injection-burners, a 30 m long bottom (250 0 surface, 9,164
mm :ide);~1t produaesj~O tons/fiour (with oold fee(l) and is fueled with
mix d gas 0,400-cal/hO)j The heat capaoity of the furnaae is equal to
114 million Oal/h, distributed as followas 10% in the soaking zone, 26% in
the first and second upper fusion zone, each,-30% in tHe lower fusion zone.
The alabs (120-160 x 600-1,500 x 3,500-4,000 mmb 6 ton in weight, are fed
in two lines. Each slab is transported by 5-3 sliding pipes. The pusher
is operated by a 120-tom-forae. The atonolLthia bottom project3 into the
first fusion zone up to about 3 m, (Fig. 1). This new type of furnace had
certain drawbacks which have to be eliminatedc 1) the frame of the furnace
was not sufficiently rugged; during operation, the pusher started vibratina

causing the rupture of the refractory lining. Therefore, the feed surface
had to be reinforoedg the bean supporting the alidingtubes had to.be con-
nectel by anchors to the pusher-base and the furnace-framework had to be
reinforced by struts. The stability of the sliding tubes calculated for a
uniform static load with an 1-3 coefficient was inadequate. Actually, them
tubes bended under the accumulated load of two slabal simultaneously they
were extended by the pusher force. Friction coefficients and values of spe-
cifio pressure occurring between slabs and sliding tubes had to be checked,
and the beading of the tube, resulting from thermal deformation of its sup-
port had to be considered. 2) During operation, cold air was blown in at
the output end of the furnace, while combustion products were separated at
the input end which reduced the efficiency of the furnace, lowered the safe-
ty conditions and increased the wear and tear of the equipment. Under such
conditions, uniform heating of slabs required in the production t%f thin
sheets, could not be maintained. The following steps were advised as to
eliminate existing shortoomingst the contraction between the soaking zone
and the first fusion zone should be reduced to 550 - 560 mm, that between
the first and second fusion zones to 800 mm; the vault should have a radiA

shape-at the feed:end; -the-upper part of this surface should be displaced
in the direction of the metal flow, so that the tangent at the end of the
vault could touch the external surface of the flue; the transit from fron-
tal surfaces to the enlarged part of the flue must be constructed at an
angle of, 300- 3) The cinder fusing an the furnace bottom protruding into
the first fusion zone formed a sediment there. Cleaning of the furnace bot-
tom required stoppage of operation. In order to avoid this, the wall of
the first fusion zone should be moved.in the direction of the feed end. In
this way-the- sector of the monolithic bottom in the 'fusion. zone would be
shortened. Moreover, suitable cleaning equipment for this operation should
be designed and the sliding pipes should be-proteoted by heate-resistant and
high-strength steel. 4) The.injector type burners had an inadequate air
reserve and burnt out due.to flames breaking-,.through. The replacement of
burners was diffi,6ult. Therefore, speoial.'-burners'should be used, with suf-
ficieiit reserve air and inclined, parting line to facilitate exchanges; they
should be supplied with fool-proof signal system (operating at 600 - 55000,1"..
indicating when they are burnt out. All gas and air pipelines will have to
be connected in an"iaolined-position to enable the use of cranes in repla&g
operations- 5) The service life of the lining;aust be raised. At the Za-

porozhatall plant dinas bricks were used instead of firebricks, at the Al-
chevsk plant the inner sida of the wall was built with chromomagnesite and
firebricks; by using large size bricks the lining becomes sufficiently
stable, with regard to both structure and heat resistance. 6) The inaula-
tion,of tubes by meansof-packing and bolts welded to them proved to be un-
satisfactory. At Azovatall, the tubes were insulated with blocks and
coupled together. In the future,.furnaces-will be equipped with automatic
temperature control and a television systeme'to observe the slabs in the
furnace. Designs are made to automize the-entire process. There are 4 fig-
ures.

described. These ccmpo=ds were obtained with an almost quantitative
yield durIng the reaction of-N,, MI-dibenzyltrimethylenedlemine with
aroawtic aldehydes. The piperimidine compounds are described as will-
crystallizing substances with a constant melting point after only one
crystallization. When used as bases, they. offer hydrochlorides and
picrates. They are characterized by decomposition when heated with
diluted acids and formation of basic substances (diamine and eldehyde).

Abstract Investigations of the resilient properties of glass and
fine ceramics have been carried out by the ultrasonic
method developed by S.Ya. Sokolov, which is based on
periodic emission of short ultrasonic impallses and their
subsequent reception after passage over a given distan-
ce within the specimen. In the determinations Is regia-
tered the time t during which the ultrasound covers the
distance S, and propagation velocity of the ultrasound
is determined. By means of suitable forraaas a determi--

TITLEi Volcanic Eruption Funnels on the Kola Peninsula
PERIODICALs Razvedka i okhrana nodr# 1959s Hr 3# PP 5-8, (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The article describes breccia-like rock formationn in the
Kandalaksha Gulf (Telyachjy Island and Cap Turiy ) in ge-
neralt and the geological jtructure of an eruption funnel
on the Yelovyy Island in particular. The latter is iden-
tical with kimberlite funnels of the Cap Province, South
Africa. The following scientists have contributed to the
geological survey Of the Kandalaksha Gulf areas D.S.
Belyankin, B.M. Kupletskiy, N.G. Sudovikov, K.A. Shurkin,
A.G. Bulakh, A.A. Kukharenkov Ye.I. Nefedov, and Mineralo-
gist G.P. Romanovp with the -'Torth-'."test Geological Admini-
ntration carrying out the prospecting work. The sectional
plane of the funnel has the shape of an irregular oval
stretching from S,*7 to NE and measuring 18 x 10-5 m (see
diagram 1). It had been fori,-ied in four stages during the

funnel discovered in the Kola Peninsula area, chances are
