Abstract: An active strain of Clostridium felsineum was isolated from
h=ip straw steep liquor with the aid of which a number of
experiments were conducted an retting ef flax under laboratory
conditions. It was shown that with use of a 48 hour culture
of Cl.felaineum In concentrations of 3 end 10$ (ratio of straw:
water of 1:20), the process of retting flax straw was speeded
up by 33-W%- Even a greater acceleration of the retting pro-
cess was observed with the use of an inoculum containing 10$
of bacterial culture and 2% of yeast (Saccharmvaes elipsoideus).

ABSTRACT: A true solution of SiO2 is obtained by means of roasting 0.05
g of ore or sinter with 0.05 g of Na2CO3 at a temperature of
10000 for a period of 2 min-, the chloride solution is then treated
with 5 cc of concentrated NaOH under heating. The process of
determining the SiO2 is concluded by photocolorimetric pro-
cedures whereby the complex heteropoly acid, H8Si (MO207)
H20 is reduced with Mohr's salt until molybdenum blue is ob-
tained. The analysis described requires 15-20 minutes. the
relative deviation from the weight method being equal to 2-31%.

Electrodynamics

Abstract :The author investigates the basic characteristics of one of the
classical theories of the electron starting with the hypotheris of
a moving electric liquid, defined by a continuous distribution of
momentum and energy per unit charge, or by a distribution of a four-
component velocity. The magnetic properties of the electron are
defined by the polarization of the electric liquid. This results
in a version of the Dirac new electrodynamics, and the author
inclicates the points that are comwn with the recently proposed non-
linear electrodynamics, based on different points of view, given
by Glazer (Referat Zh. Fizika, 1956 9543) and Bechert (Bechert K,
km. Phys. 1950, 7, 370; 19511 10, ~30)-

it is not possible to separate strictly infectious and non-infectious diseases one
frorn another. When judging the character of an infectious disease. due considera-
ti,n should be given to 3 significant factors underlying its course: the attacking
tnicroorganism. the external milieu and the reacting macroorganism. In combat-
ing infectious diseases efficiently Public Health Services rank first. The most ef-
acient form of prevention is systematic protective vaccination. Vaccination is
carried out in schools in accordance with instructions issued by the Ministry of
public Health (tb. diphtheria. tetanus. smallpox; in kindergartens also whooping
cough). In 1957 vaccination against poliomyelitis wU1 be started. Physicians
charged with vaccination are committed to an annual plan drawn up by the Director
of the Regional (District) Board of Hygiene. with the assistance of the Regional
(District) PaediatricLan. Passive immunization against infectious hepatitis. polio-
myelitis and. under certain circumstances, also against morbilli is administered
q tneans of gammaglobulin and mixed plasma.

Abstract Infrared spectra were obtained for the components of brown
coal (lignite., xylitep &ad humic acids) and also of vood.,
cellulose., and lignines. The spectrum of VVte to quite
similar to the spectrum of cuts of fir trees and can be con-
sidered as a superposition of the spectra of lignine and col-
lulose with that differeaceo that in the spectra of wood and
cellulose two narrow peaks 1030 and 1060 CM-1 appear instead
of a broad band in'the region of 1050 cm-1. After processing
with water in an antoclavej, the collulose becomes destroyed.
Comparison of the lignite spectra before and after methyliza-
tion by diazomethane indicates a low content of carboxyl
groups in the lignite. The work will be published in detail
