Abstract: The author presents the distribution of pathogens which were
found to,cause, mastitis in"cows. In 1961, almost 98 per cent of the disease
was caused by Stroptoooccus, Milk.samples of all cows in 19 megyes have
been tested by the author. Streptococcu3 Infection was found to ranGe between
8.5-27.9 per cent, invarious state farms. The results are tabulated in the
arti6le.-This' high rate of infection was hot manifested in a decreased milk
production. This is attributed to the fact that both healthy and diseaseq
cows'had a rather low rate of milk production, about 10 liters/day. The
author urges the exclusive breeding of cows with high milk production but
warns that mastitis will become more pronounced when animals of more sensi-

.Abstract [Authors' English summary, modified]: In 1~64_65 authors investigated
1.307 samples of fodder produced in Hungary (78 bran, 77 barley, 87 corn, 28 oat,
11 alfalfa-meal and seed grits, 8 pea, 8 soybean, 6 sunflower seed and 4 rape
samples) for thepresence of Aspergillus flavus. This mold could be isolated
from 118 samples. The aflatoxin-producing capacity of 64 of these strains was
investig4ted in cultures on Czapek-Dox madium at 280C for two weeks. It was
found that, with the exception of bhe rape samples. a considerable number of
the strains of a group of samples ware aflatoxiti-producing, Of the 64 strains
tested 43 produced afl4toxin in quantities ranging from 0~5 to 15 ppme

Abstract; (Author's English summary modified] It was established by the
author that, by using vacuum, a concentration of 0.75 kg per cubic meter
of ethylene.oxide gas mixed with COp was capable of killing cultures of the
following bacteria under experimental conditions at 250 C and within 18
hours: Salmonella anatum, E. coli, Bacterium Rhuslopathie, List. manocyto-
genes. Str.-agalactiae, Staph. aureus pyogeneg. Bact. subtilis. Streptomyces
dodriferous and those of Mucor. Penicillitm glaucum and Aspergillus flavus
containing conidia in large numbers. It was established that feed of
animal origin can -. be freed of bacteria in --this manner even if treated
in burlap sackscontaining 50 kg of the meal each. On the basis of the ex-
perimental results It is proposed that infected meal samples be sterilized
by using the ethylene oxide treatment. 6 Eastern European, 7 Western refer-

Abstract: [English article) o-Hydroxyphenylacetic acid forms non-enzyma-
tically in the presence o! phenylacatic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and bi-
valent iron ions in submerged cultures. It forms enzymatically if phenyl-
acetic acid is added to the culture broth. Both processes consume hydro-
gen peroxide. Enzymatic hydroxylation is inducible. The decrease of the
rate of non-enzymatic hydoxylation depended on the catalase activity of
cell-free extract. The hydrogen peroxide consuming enzyme activity ap-
peras to compete for hydrogen peroxide and/or free OH radicals which
are necessary for the hydroxylation. 20 references, including 4 Hunga-

A study is presented of the changes of the androgenous milieu in patients subjected
to roentgen irradiation. Because of the small number of cases and the physiological
nicillations of the ketosteroid excretion, the data obtained should be interpreted with
reserve. They tend to show, however, that (t) in women with cancer who respond
favourably to roentgen irradiation the ketosteroid excretion remains unaltered or
increases but never decreases, and (2) in women with transient improvement or
arrest of the process the initial values are lower, and the excretion shows a tendency
to increase and decrease alternately. After the 4th series of irradiations, it is the
decreasin_g tendency which distinctly predominates; (3) in women responding un-
favourably the initial levels are low and the excretion curve shows an irrejular
course with a predominatin& tendency to decrease. The shift of the milieu in the
:ndrogenous dhmdon constitutes a manifestation of the defence of the organism
nd is therefore also of prognoadc, s4pificante.

The oestrogen and progesterone metabolism is influenced by the liver, particularly

the catabolism of these hormones. Women with hepatic lesions proved to have
cyclic disturbances as well in more than 750,6 of the cases. Ten per cant of all
menstrual disturbances occurred in women with hepatic affections. In 85% of these
cases the histological picture of the endometrium indicated a prolonged and en-
hanced stimulation by ceitrogens. Thid finding confirms the view that In hepatic
diseases often an increased oestrogen level of the blood is present as the conse-
quence of a decreased catabolism a( theme substances.

Abstract [Articlo in English; authors' English summary]: The affect of phanyl-
acetic acid (PKA) on paroxidase and catalaze activity in Penicillium
chrysogenum culture broth and in hyphae, was investigated. Peroxidase enzyme
activity was not influenced significantly by the addition of FAA during
cultivation. on the other hand,presence of FAA in the culture broth resulted
in an enhancemont of catalase activity. After the addition of PAA,the con-
centration of o-hydroxyphanylacetic acid (o-HPAA) increased in the filtered
broth. The rate of formation of o-HPAA was Inversely proportional to the
rate of biosynthesis of bonzy1penicillin. 7 References, all but 1 Wastern.

Abstract; CAuthor's German summary] The author reports the use of Intra-
;Z_scular "Chlorocid"injection In 25 cases. The drug is produced by the
Combined Pharmaceutical and Nutritional Factory (Egyesult Gyogyszer es
Tapszergyar) and is not yet released. Side-effects and effectiveness
of the compound are discussed. In the author's observation, the drug
can be used without significant side-effects. Excellent results, as
is expected from a broad-spectrum antibiotic, were obtained. 9 Hungarian,
