TEXT: The suggested mvthod is of the Pulse-frequency type using
one transmission channel only. I'lt the receiving point tile recti-
fied amplified signal is applied to the indicator. A multiple-link
circuit connected to it is characterized by a uniformly pulsating
volta.-,e, developed from the meusured frequencies at a receiving
point common to all iiidicators. This voltage is applied in the'form
of synchronizing pulses to ueparate multiple-link circuits, in
which average values of the puluating voltage are formed during the
transmission of meauured magnitudes. In the intervals between the
transmission of these values they are .iaintained at their previous

TEXT: The iditol (II) eater of napWiquinone- [1,2] -diazide-[2]-5-sulfonic
acid (1-acid) is obtained by condensing crude chloride of I with II in an
acetone solution, or alternatively with an aqueous solution of potassium
or sodium salt of Il under the action of aqueous Na 2Co 3* 288 g potassium
salt of I and 2300 g chlorosulfonic acid (111) are mixed togetherv heated
to 90-1000C for 1-1-5 hr, cooled to 200C and poured into crushed ice; the
water is then removed by auction and the isolated chloride of I is washed
with water until the excess of III has been eliminated. The resulting
precipitate is placed in a solution of 100 g II in 1 1 acetone; when it
has dissolved the mixture is heated to 400C, 1 1 10% aqueous Na2C0 3 is

added in the course of 2 hr, the mixture is left to stand for 12 hr, the
viscous fraction forming on the bottom is ground in water, the water is re-
moved by suction, the powder obtained is triturated with 0-5-0.75~4 aqueous
NaOH, washed with water and dried. This produces the eater referred to
above, which is used in the manufacture of light-sensitive films.

carried out in a new calorimeter designed by J. Coops et al. (Ref a 1) .
Combustion took place in a bomb calorimeter developed at the Termi-
aheskaya laboratoriya, im. V. F. Luginina MGU (Thermal Laboratory imeni
V. P. Luginin of Moscow State University). The measuring technique is
described in a paper by S. M. Skuratov et al. (Ref, 3). The calorific

value of the calorimeter system was determined with an acc,ri,'...
0.02 - 0.03 per cent by means of benzoic acid supplied by Vi3esz~jLkz~,.j~

Mendeleyev). Because of the easy polymerizability of 2-vinyl pyridine,
the substances investigated were prepared immediately before combustion,
distilled, and filled into ampule. Special attention was paid to the
purity of the substances. 2-ethyl pyridine was obtained by hydrogenfkt'.~ot-
of 2-vinyl pyridine, which resulted from condensation ofc(-piooline
with paraformaldehyde and from dehydration of the resultant alcohol on
alkali. The physical data of both substances are compared in Table 1
with data available in publications. When calculating the combustion
heat (at 250C), all corrections necessary were considered (Regnault-
Pfaundler-Usov formula; correction according to E. W. Washburn, Ref. -4)
Table 2 gives the following data for the two Esubstancesa heat of con
bustion, change AN25 of enthalpy on combustion with molecular
liquid
oxygen at 1 atm to form CO 2' H20 , and N2 . The formatIon hoat of ethyl
pyridine was found to be 0.69 kcal/mole and that of 2-virxyl pyridine

ABSTRACT: On the basis of an examination of the available litera-
ture on the determination of the mean latitude,-it is con-
cluded that for some reason, the latter changes with time. In
an earlier paper of the author (1) more than 140 000 of such
determin tions were examined. In order to discover the
reasons for these changes the author considers observations
carried out on pairs of instruments at Poltawa and Mizusawa
as well as at Richmond and Washington which are roughly on
the same meridian. The dependence of these changes on the
programme of observations and the instrument is investigated.
It is concluded that the changes in the mean latitude which
occur in the form of ix-regular waves do not depend on the
Card 1/2 programme but on some deficiency of the ihstrument which leads
to a systematic build-up of errors. The latter results in an
apparent change in the mean latitude which is sometimes dis-
continuous.
