ABSTRACT: Irena. Bbbr-I,Iodrak studied physics and mathematics
at St. Petersburg from 1908-1912, obtaining a candi-
date's degree, and then worked at the same university's
physics laboratory until 1920. She returned to Poland
in 1920 rihere she joined the staff of Warsaw Univer-
sity's Institute of Physics, obtaining a doctor's de-
gree in 1928. In 1934 she organized the Vlarsaw Beis-
molo,:;ical Observatory and was closely connected with
it for the rest of her, life. Apart from being direc-
tor of the Observatory, she was also lately President
of the Board of the Polish Society of Geophysicists
and also a member of the European Commission of the
Int, erna t i anal Associatlon of S)eismology and Phyoics

]PERIODICAl; Acta geophysica polonica, v. 89 no. 1, 1960, 3-7
TEXT: The author first notes the deaths of two leading Polish
seismologists: Docent, Doctor Irena Bbbr-Modrak, head of the
Warsaw Seismological Observatory, on February 25, 1959, and Pro-
feBBor Edward W. Janczewski, head of the Department of Applied
Geophysics at the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy, Cracow, on
August 24, 1959. It is pointed out that a biography of Doctor Bo'br-
Modrak and a list of her works appeared in Acta geophysica poloni-
ca, v. 72 19597 189-191, and a biography of Professor Janczewski
.PlUB a list of his scientific works was published in Acts, geophy-
Bica polonica, v. 8, 1960p 36-40. The equipment of Polish observa-
torieB and seismological stations of the Institute of Geophysics,

Polish Academy of Sciences-is next examined and the author states
that within the framework of the IGY 1957/1958 program, such equip-
ment has been both improved and considerably increased; Construc-
tion of two sets of short-period seismographs Type SK-58 was com-
pleted. A description of this type is given by J. Hordejuk, J.
Uchman and 3. Wojtczak (Ref. 14: "A new type short-period seismo-
graph SY-58", Acta Geophys. POI., 7~ pp. 165-175, 1959). One of
these Bets has been installed in the Cracow Seismological Observa-
tory, the other in a new specially built cellar in the Silesian
Geophysical Station at Racibbrz. The Cracow Seismological Observa-
tory has also installed a new set of the Kharin Type ZXbstractor's
notei Not describe27 shDrt-period seismographs, purchased from the
USSR. The planned extension of the seismological station network
in the Upper Silesian region by erecting three new stations at
TOBzek, ByBtra and Siewierz has been postponed. Instead, a new
BeiBmological station (Planetarium) has been established at Chor-
z6w. It iB.pointed out that the substratum conditions of the

1957-1960 four annual Bulletins containing definitive seismologi-

the IGY 1957/1958, the Seismological Observatory in Warsaw made
detailed evaluations of microseismic movements, published regular-
ly in monthly provisional Bulletins. R. Teisseyre extended the
theory of propagation of seismic waves in ideal wave guides to the
case of an arbitrary point source (Ref. 26: Seismic waves in an
ideal wave-Euide with arbitrary point-Bource, Acta Geophys. Pol.,
6, pp. 32-48, 1958). He published --partly in collaboration with
i. Droste-- a number of papers regarding the mechanism of earth-

quakeB according to the dislocation theory (Ref. 6: The mechanism
of earthquakes according to dislocation theory, Rep. of the T8hoku
University, Ser. 91, Geophys., 11, No. 1, PP. 55-71, Sendai 1959).
Z. Droste, S. Gibowicz and J. Hordejuk made it detailed study of
the problem of seismograph response to the initial impulses and
computed the respective frequency and phase characteristics for
the instruments used in Poland (Ref. 5: Analiz pervykh smeshcheniy
seyBMicheskoy volny na seysmogrammakh (Analysis of the first move-
mentB of the seismic -waves recorded on seismograms), Acta Geophys.

formulae permitting determination of the magnitude of distant
earthquakes at the Silesian Geophysical Station at Racib6rz (Ref.
4: Determination of the magnitude of distant earthquakes at the
Silesian Geophysical Station in Racib6rz, Acta Geophys. Pol., 6,
pp. 223-229, 1958). Finally, the author mentions that as in pre-
vious years, seismic prospecting has been widely undertaken by in-
tereBted geophysical exploratory institutes and organizations in
?o1and ZXbstractor's note: These not mentioned in text7. There are
2 tables and 29 references: 26 Soviet-bloc and 3 non-Zoviet-bloc.
