ABSTRACT: The present article reviews the geological structure
of the petroleum and gas regions of the Near East and
presents a brief description of the petroleum de-
posits. These regions are--Bahrein, Saudi Arabia,
Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. A map shows the 'Lo-
cation of the deposits on a background of the basic
structural elements in the area. A table lists the
deposits and indicates the first year of production,

The author established 2o individual cultures of flies stemming
from a region in Olich inBecticidOB had never been used. In tests
.with larvae the auUvr idded 2oo t DDT per 1 cm3 culture medium.
The larvae do not yet perish aft er this (it was only at 50jot
that 5eia of the larvae )aerished). For acting upon grown f ies,
a strip of gilter papae.- which had earlier been infiltrated with
a DDT-Bolution in aceto.ie and then dried was inserted into a glass
tube containing food at its bootom. The flies were kept in this
glass tube for 24 hours In the open the number of flies mainly

sitivity of various lines was determined relative to females.
On the possiblity of the increase in resistance without selection.
The second generation of the flies was divided into two subalines.
One subline was cultivated for several generations in a culture
medium with 2o DDT; the second subline served as control. The
sensitivity wattested in the progeny of the larvae cultivated
in DDT-glasses. Table 1 shows that such flies did not acquire any
increase resistance. The sesitivity of the larvae from the sub-
lines which developed fo., wany generations in the poisoned cul-
ture medium were also tested. Vo increase in resistance was ob-
served here either. On tie possibility of the increase in re-
sistance of individuals vithout the influence of poisoning, ser-
ving for selection. The iost resistant was selected frod*the 2o
lines. From that the mos; reeistant subline of flies with which
no test3 for the determisation of the sensitivity had been made
was selected. According to this method work was also done in
further generations, I.e. properties of the brothers and sisters
of the individuals being cultivated served as selection criteria.
These individuals themse.ves did not get in touch with DDT in any

dual cultures and a groat number of flies the inbreeding was dis-
turbimE. Thus two different methods were applied to the same
material and different results were obtained. The influence of
the subliminal 3)DT-doses through several generatione did not
increase the resistance, The second method - the selection of
flies which had never come into touch with DDT in earlier Sene-
rations - led to an inci,ease in resistance by more than loo
times. It is quite eviditnt that the selection p4ya a very im-
portant part in the increase of resistance. But the theory of
direct adaptation is ustless for an explanation of the resistnace
of the natural populaticris. There le-1 table.
