ABS'kRACT: Data are presented on the verification of a theory for the
carrying capacity of flat plates. The presentation comprises
qualitative testing of basic propositions of the theory (the kine-
matics of limiting states of the plates, failuri.- patterns, problems
of ri8id-plastic deformation patterns, etc.) by means of solutions
for a number of plates with certain types of I )ading. Numerical
results of the experimental verification of tho theoretical solution
for some cases (with due account to the orth)tropy and hetero-
geneity of the plates) are also given. The e-4periments were.
carried out on reinforced concrete plates in :.izes of 74 x 74,
74'x' 144, and 74xZ14 cm, 3 cm thick, with a reinforcing coeffi-
cient of OJ5 and 0.505 percent. Steel bars, Z.Z mm in diarl)eter,

'AB'STRACT: 7he basic method used to control ships by IUS [radar] when sailing the in-
land vaterwaya is tbe location-seamanlB eye method of navigation. The ship's position
in the channel is determined from the radar image of the section of the route ar. aeen
bZ the eye, and the direction it wbieb the ship is to move 1B selected from known
radar ranges.; Cdrrectness of movement is monitorel iising the positions of the course
elevations relative to the radar ranges and ship's position. When sailing along a
river the radar images are oriented along the course, so on curnved Sections of the
route the image is blurred and-orientation is impossible. The aforementioned short-
comings can be overcome by the following methods., In the turn made during the
to a wide, curved,.section with large berd radius, the radar range fixing
-the-begi=Ing of the turn iv determined, course it,chansea 5 to 100, and the entire

turn inuade in straight Begments of an arc wbich holds the range. During the
approach to a section with a small bend radius, tie order is given at the turning
point to change course by an amount equal to the :ingle with Uhich the channel turns, i
the range in this case being lost. Failure to adjust sbip's speed to t6 radius or
+
the bend in the channel often results in the ship going aground. Adding to this
problem is the fact-that commencement of the turm is delayed by a period of time
equal to that required to relay the information cn the RIB screen, give the order,
have the helmsman react, etc. Thu maximum value for thz deviation observed at the
end of the turn can be expressed-by a formula. 1y assigning definite values for the
pe=issible deviations of the ship from the chanrel axis, this formula can be used to
determine the maximum speed with respect to the tluinnel width, turning radius, and
turning angils, Turning methods vbich take the cixrent into'conaideration are reviewed
in detail. Formulas, tableB2 an&.'curveaare ino..uded, Ao'ludovicbe CTranslation

TITIZ: installation for automatically mooring inall river ships

ABSTRACT: An installation for accomplishing th~ following has been suggested: (1)
automatically coupling ship and mooring when th~ distance between ship rind berth is
in the 3 to 5 meter range; (2) smooth braking o" the ship; (3) drawing ship and
berth tosether; (4) stopping the ship at a defiaite place in the berth; (5) holding
'he ship rigidly Vnere stopped; (6) allowing vertical movement of the ship within I
fixed limits; (7) satisfying the requirements of automatic and conventional.mooring
methods; (8) rapid uncoupling of ship and mooriag. The installation is not activated!
when the approach speed exceeds normnal. It does nothing to complicate approach to,
or departure from, the berth. The installatior consists of two basic devices, one
of Which is on the dock, the other on the ship. The shore device consists of three
parts: the braking device; a sliding lock for 1he automatic coupling; and an arrest-
ing device. The braking device proper is a ro~ vinich can be extended from a cylinderl
by an internal spring. There is a cleat on th( end of the rod. The rod can be

tilted from a position parallel to the berth b:- an angle of up to 70% 14-.en the
rod is positioned paraliel to the bertuh it is Lold in this Position by the arresting
device. The automatic coupling lock extends bi-yond the berth cordon. Me shipboard
section of the installation consists of a catc). and a vertical rack located at the
same distance apart as are the rod and the automatic coupling on the dock. Upon
approaching the berth the book catches the clet.t, the rod extends the spring and,
overcoming Ithe ship's inertia, draws its bow i3ito the berth. When it is in a
position parallel to the berth the arresting do!vice is operated. Shifting the rudder
as needed, and voeking fhe engines in the aheat. direction, the stern is brought in.
The rack enters the chain lock and closes it. The methodology used to design the
nooring device, the test results, and the economic effectiveness are all presented.

To tlarify the role of certain alloying elements in the dbange in the energy state of
the grain boundaries In beat resistant nickel base alloysp-these elements were
Introduced into an a1loy with the following initial chemical composition: 0.15-0.20%
carbon; 15-20% iron-, 14-16% chromium; 2.8-3-5 molybdenum; 2.9-M% tungsten; remainder
nickel. 'The fol-lowing alloying elements were investigated: C93, 11r, Nd, B, Zr, Al, 1b,
and Ti. The effect of the added elements is shown in tabular form and by
microphotographs of the alloys. B general, it is concluded that introduction into
heat resistant nickel base alloys of small amounts of a1loying elements, Including
boron k-A ziroonium, brings about a favorable form of distribution of the excess
phases, vihich should promote strengthening of the Intergrain boundaries In these
Alloys, Crige art. has3 formulas, I figure' and I table.

Abstract: The effect of pH (from one to 7.45) on the distribution of the bands
during the chromatographic separ4tion of nixtures of Ktand Cr3+,
Co2t and Cu2+ " Cr3+ and N12t j- IV+ and Pb2t ions an A120 3 columns has
been Investigated. it was found that the acidification of the solu-
tions by the addition of M103 does not change the relative distribu-
tiom of the bands but does Increase the band velocity on the column.
