Abstract Lev Ivanovich Kursanov, Head of the Chair of Lower Plants of the Bio-
logical-Soil Faculty, died on 11 Decenber 1954 at the age of 78. Kur-
sanov joined the faculty of the university when he graduated in 1900.
His specialty was the study of algae and fungi. His doctor's disserta-
tion on "Morphological and Cytological Research on the Uredineae Group"
which he defended in 1915 was very exhaustive and earned him a place
among the foremost Russian mycologists. He became head of the Chair of
Lower Plants vhen it van created In 1918 and occupied that position until
M3 death. He worked on phytopothology, Wcotic rots of vood, and anti-
biotics. He was active in the activities of the University. He received
three awards from the government.
