"Results of Treating Typhoid Patients With Tetracycline," by
K. 17 niinin N. 11. Oootrovc%ly, Antibiotiki, Vol 2, No 2,
Nsr-Apr 57, 1)1) 4~~-50
This work describes observations of 24 patients with typical clin-
Ical manifestations of typhus who werc treated with tetracycline hydro-
chloride. Tetracycline therapy was initiated no later than from the
f1fth to eighth day of the disease-, the preparation was not administered
to persons with mild cases, subclinical infection, or to cases admitted
to the clinic late in the diGeiise course.
Tetracycline hydrochloride was given to patients under cbaervation
In dcses of 0.3 9 five times a day in capsule or powder form. 71ift dose,
selected on the basis of data appearing in foreign literature and studies
made in the laboratory of Prof Kh. 121. Planellyes, was given during the
febrile period and during the 2 days after normalization of the tempfra-
ture. Use of the prepuration was discontinutd due to side reactions In
only one case.

On the basis of these clinical studies, the following observations
are presented:
"1. Tetracyclinc is an effective preparation for therapy of' ty-phus
patients.
"2. The clinical effect of using tetracyclim-- is expressed by a
decrease in the degree of intoxicatiun within 24-48 hours, and by nurlial-
Ization 3f tempt-rature on an average of 2.6 days after the Initiation
of therapy, with paraliel disappearance of other symptoew of the disease.
"3. Side toxic-aliergic phenomena during tetracycline therapy were
expressed in 37-5"?1 cf the patients by the development of hyi~erc,-nla of the
throat and repeated vomiting, and in some by freclucat vomiting with
diarrhea and abdminal pain. (U)
