ABSTRACT: A simplified model of the complex automatic device
developed by D, M, Belov, S. S. Krylov, and Ye. A. Snegirov to
investigate defensive conditioned motor reflexes of cats and dogs is
described. The simplified model consists of four basic units. The
first (see Enclosure 1) is a screened chamber divided in two by a
partition. Each half has a removable floor made of aluminum pipes
which are supplied with AC current of the required voltage. Under
the floors are piezoelectric pickups for registering animal movements.

attached to the coiling of the chamber. The second unit (see-
Enclosure 2) is a portable automatic control unit. The third unit
records the types of stimuli and the reactions of the animals. The
fourth unit supplies the device with either of two types of AC currext,

ABSTRACT: The main power plant on the "Poltava" diesel ship is equipped with a six-~
cylinder 8300 hp 115 rpm internal combustion engine made by the "Burmeyster and
Vayn" company. The 155-73 m vessel has a beam of 20.6 m, a speed of 16 knots F~nd
displaces 18,400 tons. Electric power for the vessel is supplied by a three-d-'esel
generator with a 300 hp diesel at 500 lym and a 275 kva 400 v MS 275-500.'genera,~or.~o
The generators are equipped with an automatic voltage control sis`t~_M~I_d are pat
into parallel operation by the precision syntlironization method. The characteristics
of the principal mechanisms and systems in the ship are given. with experimentr-1 ~aata
on the degree of loading. Loading of the electrical systein under all conditions is
given. The load on the electrical system is 240-270 kw per day under sailing cor-
ditions in the tropics, 180-220 kw per day during sailing in the temperate zone, 125,--
kw at anchor without loading operations and without air-conditioning, 155 kw under

the same conditions with air-conditioning, 170-180 kw during loading, anci an
average of 280 kw during docking operations. Tests under normal operating condi-

diesel generators with a power of 300 kw apiece and one 200 kw generator must be
used in vessels of the "Poltava" type since the load on the electric power system
under way is 180-220 kw in the temperate zone and 240-270 kv in the tropics. Conse-I
quently two diesel generators with a power of 200 kv apiece must operate under saii-
ing conditions at a load of 40-60% which means unstable generator operation and con-,
stant duty for electricians which cannot be allowed on modern ships. Electric
equipment for cranes operates quite reliably on the whole. 4 illustrations, 3

after an analysis of parts drawings prepared by the leading machine-building
plants In Gor'kiy. To prevent inefficient use of the M,, the authors established
maximum parameters for certain Initial data (Particularly for the sizes of the
vorkpieces and parts). Such limitations permitted the coding of drawings of
A gears, flanges, bushings, smooth and sl1tted axes, and shafts whose outer dia-
meters and lengths do not exceed 4,000 mm, and which have'no more than 15 outer
and 7 inner surfaces. Only a few parts fail to meet these requirements. The
coding system covers three groups of information. The first group contains in-
formation about the individual cylindrical and annular outer and inner surfaces,
about the diameters and other linear dimensions,, and about the accuracy and
smoDthness of the processed surfaces. The second group consists of Information
concerning the characteristics of Individual surfaces or of such groups as,
e.g.# teeth, slits, key and other slots.. grooves, threads, openings along di-
rections other then the"basic axis of the part, etc. This group Include also in-
formation concerning the relative positions of various surfaces, their thermal
treatment, etc. The tbird group includes information about the characteristics

ABSTRACT: In the apparatus succested the weight of the deposited particles
is determined by measuring the volume of the ai~ displaced into
a side tube of the apparatus by the suspension. The amount of
the deposited particles is proportional to the volume of the
displaced air. In this way the measuring accuracy can be con-
siderably increased as compared to the measurements of sedimento-
meters based on a change of the hydrostatic pressure of the
suspension. A schematic representation of the apparatus is given.
The sedimentaticn curve is plotted in the coordination time -
level of the air-filled part of the gas burette. The height of
the suspension column in the side tube is determined by a mano-
meter. The further elaboration of the measuring results is car-
ried out according to the usua-l method (Ref 1). Integral curves
of the dimensional distributi.n in samples of sodium bicarbonate
taken from different barrels of the carbonization column of a
soda factory are given as an illustration of the operation of the

Technological Bases of an Automatic Control of Precipitating
Columns in the Carbonization Department of a Soda Works
Xhimicheakaya promyshlennost', 19599 Nr 69 pp 521 - 526 (USSR)
One of the principal tasks of the complex automation of the
carbonizing department is the increase in the degree of
utilization of sodium. The determinant characteristics of the
carbonizing process are as follows: the total ammonia- and
chlorine-ion content of the solution, the degree of carboni--
zAtion of the system, and the temperature of the solution.
The state V., of the system sodium bicarbonate precipitation -
carbonized"ammonia - hydrochloric acid solution can be
represented by means of these variables (within narrow limits
of variation) in a linear equation (1), 1. e.,U Na can be
influenced by a change In the temperature and degree of car-
bonization of the bicarbonate suspension leaving the column.

It was founa (Rif 4) that the clearly determining parameter
of'the degree of carbonization of the suspension may be
considered to be the pH of the mother liquor of the suspension.
The relationships between the pH, degree of carbonization,
value UNa' and working conditions were investigated in the casc
of a column (Fig); the changes made as well as the parameters
of the operation of the column are given (Table 1). When
evaluating the results obtained it was assumed that there
exists a linear dependence of the UNa and pH values on the
variables to be determined, and the corresponding equations
(2) - (5) were derived. The data obtained were evaluated by
means of the method of multiple correlations, where the
probability of the influence of the individual variables on
the values to be determined was estimated by means of
t-criteria (Table 2p valueaq standard errorap t-criteria of
the coefficients affecting equations M-W). It was found
that in the case of a constant 002 concentration in the intake
pipe at the bottom of the column and a constant temperature
