Abstract: This experimental study of the laboratory of soil
microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of Hungary
was made at the department of microbiology of the
Moscow Agricultural Academy im. K. A. Timiryazev.

ABSTRACT: The authors isolated a number of microorganisms in pure culture
which intensively develop on the root surface of spring wheat. They
were defined as 1) Bacterium candicans, 2) Bacterium agile,
3) Pseudomonas radiobacterY 4) Flavobacter solare, 5) omo
Bacter gleybiforme and Bac inm parvulum. in o-Frae-F-To deterffil~neeir
interrelatio-n-WITh the__pTa_n_T_ft h_a_ff7_o_'Fe found out which part they
have in the transformation of important nutritive substances of the
plant. For this purpose their ammonIfying, denitrifying and nitro-
gen-fixing activity was studied. As the rypes of rhizospheric bac-
teria of wheat had hitherto nit been thoroughly enough studied from
this point of view, such investigation could not be carried out. The
authorg' tests were made in the laboratory on a mineral cu-lt,-=e me-
dium. 0,50A peptone, e. g., served an source of organic nitrogen.,

mixture by Soerensen was added, in order to obtain a pH 6,98. As
sterile sulfuric acid solution or a soda sohition, as required, were
added, in order to counteract a shift of the pH into the aci-d or
alkaline direction. It may-easily be seen from the data given in
tables I - 3 that only Bacterium parvulum among the leading forms
of the rhizospheric bacteria of wheat was capable of fixing small
amounts of atmospheric nitrogen (5,9 mg per I g of consumed glucose).
Thus representatives of a number of physiological groups which. parn
ticipate in the transformation of nitrogenous substances exist among
the leading forms of these bacteria. Flavobacter solare and Achromo-
bactier globiforme belong to active am-mo-n-fr1'e-a7,o-r`s-.-TFe-y are -capa-579
of improving-IMe-nitrogen nutrition of the plants by decomposing
complicated nitrogenous organic compounds. Bacterium agile actively
reduces the nitrates to ammonia and to molecular nitroEe-n-. It is able
to influence the nitrate nutrition of the plant. The rhizospheric
bacteria can therefore not be considered indifferent companions of
the wheat root which only develop at the expense of the root secrew
tions.
