Tests were made under laboratory conditions with various types of connections, and then under operationai conditons. Possibilities of using conduits for g;:vbunding and as neutrals were investigated. It was found that the best contacts are obtained with properly made tightly connected pipe threads. Conduits can be used in grounding, but not AID P - 1945 Energetik, 3, 33-37, Mr 1955 Card 2/2 Pub. 29 - 25/31 as neutrals since even small defects in couplings may render the neutral ineffective. The size necessary for the satisfactory operation of the sources is defined. Calculation results are in good agreement with the data of direct measurements. The design principles under consideration are particularly important in the case of pulsed ion sources, designed for strong currents. Q2699 tq t9 0 z/o2o/6o/ooo/oo,,Voo8/o37 AUTHOR: Paris, Jaroslav, Engineer TITLE: Economy Control of Gas and Oil-Fueled Furnace Operation PERIODICAL: Energetika, 1960, No. 7, PP. 347 - 350 TEXT; The author states that modernization of gas and oil burning industrial furmaces in the CSR is progressing only very slowly. For cases where modern fur- naces cannot be installed, he suggests the following improvements to reduce fuel consumption and to boost the output of old furnaces: a) constructional improve- ments to be effected during general overhaul; b) exchange of burners; c) in- troduction or improvement of heat recuperation; d) choosing and maintaining prop- er heating time and temperature; e) proper placing of charges; f) introduction of multi-shift operation; g) providing furnaces with measuring control instr-Li- ments, -eventually mechanical regulation. The performance of a furnace must be carefully analyzed prior to determination of suitable improvement measures. This article describes such an analysis, performed on a heat".ng ahamber furnace with a 1.5 m wide, 1 m long and 0.5 m high hearth, a rated power input of 600,000 kcal/h, burning coal gas with a calorific value of 3,500 kcal/Nm3, with a burner efficiency TLS = 0.8 - 0.75. It has a pin recuperator preheating the air to Card 1/5 tK 2 0060/000/007/008/037 d Economy Control of Gas and 011-Pueled Furnace Operation 2DOOC. 'I%e charge consists of blanks for forming, with an average weight of 10 ka/piece and a diameter of 100 mmi. The present output is 200 kg/h at a heat. consumption of 260,000 kcal/h. The following analysis includes the determination of total heat consumption, the fuel consumption, the average output., the in- fluence of charge placing and various temperature losses. The total heat con- sumption is composed of the heat consumed for charge heating, heat losses and escape of combustion products. The heat for charge heating can be controlled to a large degree by operational provisions and is calculated by the forwala~ Q'v - io - Gv (kcal),in which Qv = heat consumed for heating the charge av(kg)i Gv = welg~it of charge (kg), i0 - heat content of the charge GV = I kg (Table 1 gives such values for steel containing 0.35% C) at At; At = difference of tem- perature at charging and discharging (OC). Temperature losses are caused also by charge overheating, and temperatures should, therefore, be kept as close to the forming temperature as possible. The average fuel consumption relative to one heating can be expressed by the formula: n - Zk io - (gr - 9DO) + -b. 5, 41 ,b S 10 Card P_/5 826 Z/O 060/0 00/0()7/'0,,"8/ 037 Economy Control of Gas and Oil-Fueled Furnace Operation in which i0 = heat content of the steel at OC (kcal/kg); gr % melting loss with a reaction heat of 900 kcal/kg; Zk = time of operation (h/operation); n - aver- age furnace loss per 1 m2 of hearLh surface (kcal/,-.12 - h), b = average output (kg/m2 - h); Zb = actual working time of furnace (h/operation); -Q, = total fur- nace efficiency. To reduce fuel consumption, It :is obvious that values for (Zk) should be as high, values for (gr) as low as possible. Values for (7to) should be an optimu.m. Values for (710) can be also improved by maintaining proper com- bustion mixtures, by additional air, and eventually also by fuel preheating. R~-- jects should be removed in cold state, if possible. The average actual output is expressed by the formula: G b = F - Zb kg/'m2 - h in which b - average output per loadedhearth surface (kg/m2 - h); G = throughput per working -time (including intermissions, heating-up, etc) (kg); F - surface (m2); h = actual working time, including shift interruptions (h./operation). For our example, b - 133 kg/m2 . h. As is obvious, the average output increases with the inc:7easing number of shifts (Diagram 1). The placing of the charge has an influence on the heating time and can be expressed acconiing to Debrochotovt Card 3/5 kK 82699 Z/O~b'/6Q/OO0/O07/,')08/0_T Economy Control of Gas and Oil-Fueled Furnace operation T' - 10 D YD (h), in which I- - heating time (4); D = characteristic dimension of cross section. This formula applies to 1 single piece resting on the base. Multiplies of this value for more pieces, placed at different distances are plotted in Diagram 2. The required heating time Increases the more the pieces are packed. For our example, this calculation shows that the rated output of 200 kg/h is too small for a hearth surface of 1-5 M2 and can be nearly doubled at full utilization of the hearth surface and by proper charge placing. The re- quired heat will be in this case Qv = 81,840 kcal/h, considering a total effi- ciency of 710 (710 = 71, (combustion efficiency) - 7[p (furnace efficiency)) 20%, the actual input will be: 1-11 = 8i,84o 500,000 kcal/h. Qs 1 0 0.2 - 0.8 Thie consuription of fuel gas is determined by the heat of the combustion produ,;+.s and a consumption of approximately 150 Nm31h (- 3,000 - 3,300 kcalAm3 combus.10r. product) is calculated for the 3,500 kcal/Nm3 coal gas used in the example cl-,ed. The consumption of gases with various calorific values Is plotted in Diagram 3. Various sources of temperature losses (caused by the lining, temperature accunula- Card V5 t/ 82,599 Z/O;:-;(j/6 01(Xk1V,,'171(f,?Wr, ~7 Economy Con-.rol of Gas and Oil-Fueled Furnace Operation tion in walls, flames flashing through openings, etc), must also be considered for the calculation of economy. Combustion chambers must have proper height, which can be determined by an empirical formula (4) and amounts to approximately 1 m for our example. Temperature losses caused by heat emanating from walls to the environment are closely depending on hearth dimensions and must be limited by proper insulation. Temperature losses for various wall and insulation thick- nesses are plotted in Diagram 4 and Table 2. Temperature losses by radiation through openings can be calculated (5) and arnount to Q. = 1125 kcal/h for our example. In unorganized operation, this value can rise up to 3,000 kcal/h. Large amounts of heat are also lost during frequent heating-up after intermissions be- tween individual shifts. A loss of 150,000 kcal/h is calculated for each 2-hour heating-up period in our example. In conclusion, the author summarizes the sau- ings, which can be achieved by realization of the improvements suggested in tnis article. There are 4 figures and 4 tables.
