ABSTRACT: The authors state that instruotl.on tn anatomic-physiological
courses by the natural science physical training faculties of
the pedagogical institutes is inadequate. This is due to the
fact that the Chairs of Anatomy and Physiology are poorly
equipped and use-poor methods of instruction. The authors
enumerate the deficiencies in tf,aching anatomy and poi:bt to
the X-ray me-thod of instruction adopted in 10,50 by -,he Gomel'
Pedagogical In8Zitute. The good results achdeved are emphasiz-
od and the use of X-ray photogr6~phs as a mears of visual in..
ntruction is recommended. It ie also suggested that the in-
otitutes be supplied with cheap, portable X-ray units. They
could also be used successfully in the agricultural institutes

It is well known that the phase lag of Earth tides
relative to the theoretical phase calculated for a
perfectly elastic Earth leads to a retardation of the
Earth's rotation. The problem was recently discussed
by Jeffreys (Ref 1), who concluded that Earth tides
due to the moon can explain no more than 1% of the
secular retardation of the Earth's rotation. However,
this deduction is based on very approximate estimates
of the relaxation times. It is therefore of interest
to try and determine the lag of Earth tides from
observations. Modern gravimeters can bet used to
determine this lag to n accuracy of + 21 or + 0-5*

waves. Analysis of recent observations shows that
there is a small lag of the order of 1-40. The
prosent author considers the effect of this lag on the
Earth's rotation. It is shown that the moment of
forces through which the tidal deformation of the
planet acts on the satellite (moo-a) is given by Eq (5),

have previously been imposed on the internal structure
of the planet (Jeffreys - Refs I and 18). The
coefficient k is determined by the true density
distribution and must be deduced from observations. In
the presence of a lag in the Eartiri tides, the satellite
will react on the plant, producing a couple tending to

The Influence of the Earth Tides on the Secular Retardation of
the Earth's Rotation
If one adopts the values for secular accelerations of
the moon and sun as given by Spencer Jones (Ref 14),
then it is found that the total effect of the secular
retardation of the Earth's rotation corresponds to a
lag in diurnal tidal waves of 2.10 and in semidiLurnal
waves of 4.20. These figures take into account the
additional acceleration of the Earth's rotation due to
internal causes. Acknowledgment is miade to
M. S. Molodenskiy for valuable advico.

APS TRAC T: This study is an informative su;7mary of the locations in
Central Siberia where allogene gravels and detritus
have been found in deposits of different ages (Permo-
triessic, tuff-conglomerates, Mesozoic and Tertiary
conglomerates, and Quaternary deposits). Concentratious
of gravels are found in ths river valleys and on the
divides. After analyzing the composition, the distri-
bution, and the roundness of the gravels, the author
concludes that these are smaller and rounder, and that
the less durable ones disappear, as one progresses
northward from the southern mountainti. When clays

the headwaters of the left tributaries of the Ketangs, were subjected
to spore and pollen analysis, it was discovered that they belonged
to the early Cretaceous time. Gravel deposits of the Vilyuy and
Lower Tungusky basins were also found to contain Mesozoic pollen and
spores. These discoveries led to the conclusion that continental
Mesozoic deposits were once quite widespread, in the southern part of
Central Siberia. The action of early river systems contributed to
the origin of allogene gravels, and the river coq)lex was consider-
ably different from what it is today; this fact ist proved by the
location of the gravels In the present river divides, Material was
carried from south to north as early sis the Mesozoic tirm. An
outline of the geographical distribution of allogene gravels in
Central Siberia is included.

ANSTRACTj ,An experimental study was made f the nonsteady-state beat
transfer between hot air (70-80C) and cylinders with 8.4 and 2.6 Tan
diameters In a transverse flow of 1-8 a/sec. The temperature variation
was measured by means of a !resistance thermonete:r in the form of
windings on the cyltnder. The ratio was plotted of Nu/Nuo, where Nu
~is the nonateady-state Nuesult number, and Nuo In the steady-state Nu,.

ABSTRACTi Results are given for an experimental investigatlon of the hydrodynamic
resistance of platinum, nichrome, and chrome]. -w-1res 0.05 to 0.40 mm in diameter
in a cross.air flow with velocities of 3 to 20 mm/sec, at st,rface temperatures
of the wires tw ranging frcm 20 to 8000C, an air temperaturto tf = 200G. and a

of a cylindbr exchanging heat with the air flow around it &Lffers from the
