TITLE: Regeneration of Molybdenum from Waste Etching
Solutions
PERIODICAL: Tsvetnyye metally, 1960, No. 12, pp. 61-65
TEXT: Six methods of regenerating molybdenum from acid
solutions have been tried. Regeneration by precipitating
molybdic acid by boiling, which is a simple method involving no
chemical reagents, gave 70-75% extraction of molybdenum. The
method of precipitation in the form of ammonium phosphoro-
molybdate was shown to be a time consuming method and also
required a high consumption of chemical.s. Precipitation as
molybdenum sulphide was found to give 70-80% extraction but only
after considerable dilution. Precipitation of molybdic acid
from a neutralised solution gave 75-83% extraction but the method
required high consumption of ammonia anti hydrochloric acid.
The method of regeneration by evaporating acid solutions,
decomposing sulphuric and nitric acids and converting the
molybdic acid to molybdenum trioxide gave 88-93% extraction.

Regeneration of Molybdenum from Waste Etching Solutions
This method required apparatus which was resistant to
concentrated sulphuric acid at 300-400 cC. The method
recommended by the authors is evaporaticn of the neutralised
solution which gave 89-97% extraction and Is a simple method.
The scheme is shown in the figure. The solution is neutralised
by ammoniacal solution and is evaporated. The salts after
crystallisation are roasted to molybdenum trioxide, ground and
screened, and reduced to molybdenum powder. The disadvantage
of the scheme is the consumption of ammonia for neutralisation.
This can be reduced by decreasing the content of nitric acid in
the solution. A further disadvantage is the power used to
roast the salts which decomposeon roasting. Under
production conditions the following :Lmpu:Pities were found in
the molybdenums 0.07-0.2 Re031 0.01-0,,07 CaO,
0.002-0.02 MgO, 0.01-0-03 Si02s tip to 0.005 Ni, and up to
0.05 S.

ABSTRACT: A method for smooth drawing of tantalum wires (Authors certificate
Nr. 148373) was devised to eliminate wire rupture and gaE, absorption by the
metallic wires which cause the wire to possess poor mechanical properties.
Since the use of ordinary lubricants and oxidizing of the metal surface does not
eliminate these difficulties, it is proposed that the tantalui.,n material after
cleaning be copper plated by hot dipping in an irner atmosphere. Hot-drawn wire
was cleaned of aquadag and oxides by electrolytic etching. Hot copper plating of

the cleaned wire was done in argon by drawing the wire through a graphite cruci-
ble with molten copper. Rate of drawing and temperature must be strictly con-
trolled for uniform coating. The latter is uniformly defortned during cold draw-
ing and does not peal off. Cold drawing of 100-200 micron diam. wire(coating
1-2 microns) to a maximum size of 40-60 microndiam. can be achieved. For
drawing to finer wires electrolytic copper plating should be superimposed thereon
(100-200 micron diam primary wire 10-20 micron diam final wire, 3-5 micron
coating achieved in two passages at a rate of 1. 5-2 ni/min, 20sec. in the bath,
20 amp/sq. in. current density). Electrolytic coating should be applied over
etched hot coating for better uniformity and smoother drawing of small gauge
wires. After drawing, coating should be electrolytically or chemically removed.
Thus, perfect cold drawing of finest gauges becomes possible due to copper
plating. Rate of drawing ranges f rorn 20- 15 m/ min for 30- 2.50 micron diam to
8-2 m/min- for 10-30 micron diam. Orig. art has: 3 figures.
