The increased pefriambility of skin catAllotim produced by
application of itallammation-caused exudates to the skin of a
rabbit is caused by the action of a- or 0-globulin fractions
and nut by pol)"tides, adenylic compds. or other low-
mol. substances (Dtlthie. C1 41., C.A. 34, 8101; Al'pem and
Lipshits, C.A. 46'
2160c). In the present work pleural
txudatc-q from dogs and tubbits as well as ptntopewiva:
human exudates were employed. Th"t vrere compared in
action with highly *;active human globulin fractions of similar
CU, Ox. exudates by the previmsty described methods (cf. above).
When the Lxud-ocs were fractionated uuder conditions

their role in phenomena of increased capillary permeabil-
ity in inflammation CLIN.CHIM.ACTA1956. 1/1(24-34) Graphs 3

Rabbit serum or exudate was fractionated with saturated ammonium sulphate and
selected fractions from the saturation zones 0 to 40% (1). 40 to 50% (U), and 50-
70% (111) were tested for their influence on capillary permeability. The frac-
tion I and fraction 11 were found to be the most effective in raising the per-
meability of rabbit skin capillaries. the fraction I being the most potent. The active
protein fraction was relatively heat-stable. Increase of P- and particularly &-
globulin with decrease of albumin occurred as early as 24 hr. after a. c. injection of
turpentine. By the 4th day the P-globulin content was increased 1.5 times and the
a-globulin content doubled. Total blood protein changed only slightly. Comparative L
effects on the permeability of the skin capillaries for protein fractions from a nor-
mal rabbit and the same rabbit at various time intervals after the induction of in-
flarnmation were also studied. The specific activity of fractions I and 11 was doubled
during the 4th to 6th days of inflammation. These fractions contained a much great-
er quantity of 0- and a-globulin than that of normal blood. At the height of inflamma-
tion the yield of fraction I generally increased 1.5 or 2-fold. The yield of fraction
11 increased Insignificantly and irregularly. Similar changes in a- and P-globulin
fractions following scalding were also obtained. Non-fractionated blood serum,
either intact or diluted up to 300 times, taken during various phases of the inflam-
matory process provoked no increase in capillary permeability. Rabbit serum
albumin was found to inhibit the permeability effects of the various homologous
blood protein fractions an well as foreign (human) globulins and histamine. Human
serum albumin exhibited a similar inhibitory effect. Weimar - New York. N.Y.

ABSTRACT: The method of differences was employed to determine the values of the
wave amplitude a* at which separation of the boundary layer occurs for the first
and second waves. All calculations were carried out by means of a standard com-
puter program for solving boundary layer problems. Refe~rence is made to a
criterion for separation of a laminar boundary layer, as (jiven ;,y G. M. Bam-
Zelikovich (Raschet otry*va pogranichnogo sloya. Izv. AN SSSR, otd. tekhn. nauk,
go. 12, 1954). Calculation variants for this study Included amplitude values of
0.01, 0.008, 0.0065, 0.005, 0.003, 0.002 and 0.001. The results obtained show
that separation occurs within the range of O-OW,8*
