ABSTRAM The report describes the basic design and the results of 7 monthr oper,
ation of a hydrofiner at the Ufa refinery. Straight-run diesel fuel &nd thermal '
and catalytic cracking fractions with 1-2.1 wt.% sulfur content and iodine numberl
of 5-20 were blended, heated in exchangers and in a tubular furnace to 380-420C, ,
and refined over an alumina -cobalt -molybdenum catalyst. Hydrogen -containing gases
were separated, scrubbed in a monoe thano I anine unit, and recirculated. After re-
moval of the gaseous fractions, the product was paused through a stabilizer to re-
cover 95.5 wt.% diesel fuel and 1.5 wt.% gasoline per food. The sulfur eoncentra-
tion in tha food varied from 1.04 to 1.4 wt.%; it wat reduced initially to 0.02 wt;.
% and after 7 month# operation to 0.13 wt.% in the diesel fuel, and the C&t&IY#t

was regenerated when the product sulfur content reached 0.25% after 240 days.
Since hydrogen deliveries from catalytic reforming and the ete&=-iron reaction
were inadequate, only one of two available refiners was operated. The design
pressure of the refiner was reduced from 50 to 34-36 to decrtass the hydrogen con-
umption. The design temperature was not changed, and the product quality was not
ffected. Various im2rovaments made on unsatisfactorily perfoxvir4g units are 689-

quality of the work. The regeneration period for operation of the catalytilt was a
months. The activity of the first reactor catalyst decreases mom quickly than the
catalyst from subsequent reactors. A depth of purification of raw materials of
sulfur compounds below 50% occurs in the first reactor after processing V00' tons of,
raw material per cubic meter of catalyst and in the second reactor upon the purifi-

ABSTRACT: This is a continuation of earlier work (FTT V. 7, 19;-_16, 1965) on the pro-
duction and stabilization of free silver atoms by x-irradiation of frozen silver-salt
solutions Rt 7TK. In the present study the authors obtained similBLr atoirs by x-
irradiation at TTK of s:.lica gels with silver ions adsorbed on their surfaces, and
stabilized these atoms on the surfaces. Ybe test procedure and the typef. of' silica
gelB are bxiefly described. The properties of -the atoms were investigated by para-
magnetic resonance using a standard 30-cm radio spectroscope (FY,1301). The stabil-i-
..zation of the silver atoms was evidenced by the fact that the thifts of llhe'~r hyper-
fine splitting (40.6 to +1.8%) differed greatly from the shiftri observed in frozen
aqueous and alcohol solutions (-12 to -24%). It Is proposed that the atomn are rta-
bilized as a result of adsorption of part of the silver ions n-om the colutton on the

surface of -the silica gel and intrusion of these ions into the ctructural micravoids
of the sxwface layer of -.;he gel; the3e voids have dimentions comparable w-Lth the ions.'
and the ions consequentlQr remain in place after the sain,)les are dried and frozen at
77K.. X-irradiation releases free electrons which are captured Iry the ions and con-
vert thezi into free atomn. Features and details of this mechanism and of the inter-
action between the silver atoms and the surface are discussed. Some of the experi-
