The most promising was ointment of the following composition: di- methylphthalate 74-17%, ethyl-cellulose 9-107c, kaolin 14-1656, terpensol 0 - I 111o - This ointment was tried from 1953-1955 in different climatic conditions of the USSR. It gives complete protection in the first three hr., in the following 2 hr. occasional bites may occur.~ After 6 hr. the ointm ent loses much of its repellent properties and should be reapplied to the skin. Its use is advised also for people working during the night or compelled to spend the night in the open in mosquito-infested localities. The duration of the protection afforded by the ointment after a single application depends on the quantity used and on careful rubbing into the exposed parts of the body. For a single application to the face, neck and the hands about 2 g. of the ointment are required. which should be rubbed into the skin with clean fingers. Repeated use of the ointment did not produce irritation of healthy skin. Vavilin - Moscow FAVIA)VSKIY, U.N.; KULICHENKO, N.I. PURPOSE: The book, written in a semi-popular style, is intended for the large circle of geographers interested in the Antarctic region. Card 1/8 The Antarctic; Materials on the History (Cont.) 464 COVERAGE: The present volume, sponsored by the Geographical Society of the USSR, is a collection of articles authored by several geographers summarizing up to date information on the Antarctic region. It provides an account of exploration and discovery since the first Russian expedition into the Antarctic in 1819, and describes the region's geological and geomorphological structure, glaciation processes, and the water currents of the south polar seas. The last chapter contains a glossary of Antarctic place names which is appearing in Soviet literature for the first time. The book is profusely illustrated with diagrams, photographs, and maps. Moreover,on the first day the ai.thor deiicrl~.es the work of these committees. The Soviet scientists submitted 55 reports, 28 of which were read at meetings. G. Ya. At the end of th- 'congress, the exhibits were preaented to the British Museum of Natural History. Sonte members of the Soviet delegation visited this Museum and exchanged collection material. The Soviet zoologists took part in the meetings of the commissions of the Congress, as well as in the meetings of the editorial staff of the periodical i eksperimentallnaya morfologiyall (Embryology and Experimental Morphology). Some excursions were also made. The author considered these interesting, as they enabled new research methods to become known. N., Academician, Lt. General of tlie Medical '--,~Orpu TITLE: Conquerable Infections. PERIODICAL: Nauka i zhiznl. 195(), No. 5, pp 55-56, (USSR) ABSTRACT: The author is the veteran Soviet zoologist and parasitolo-ist, an Active Member of the AS USSR and of the Academy of hiedi- cii-e and President of the Geographical Society of the -,USSR. In 1948 he published a "Handbook on Parasitology of Man and the Scienuo of ContlLgious Diseases". Hir article refers to the ravages created by infectious and parasitical diseases among the populations of the middle ages and modern times. In 1909 there were over 126,000 cases of smallpox in Russia. but since the Soviets came to power, smallpox, cholera, re- cuzrent fever and dysentery have been exterminated. More recently, malaria, which at one time was widespread, has been considerably reduced. Infantile mortality has been cut. in half. One of the problems of combatting infectious diseases Card 112 is the location of hot beds of carriers (ticks, etc) of bac-- SOV/25-t.9-5-22/", Conquerable Infections ter-Ia. viruses, spirochaetag rickettsia, helmintos, et::. After an outburst of epidemics, these carriers asually (~',-t only temporarily) disappear. The bacteria, etc., like a--., livinj beings, need suitable media to breed, whether cn in the water or in the bodies of other larger beings, In the latter case all their vitality is directed on reproduction.. which is sometimes phenomenal. An ascarid anrually produces 50 million eggs. In Siberia, a carrier (Ixodes persulcat-as.) was found to carry encephalitis. Some rodents in Cent:-a-' Asia are carriers of skin diseases. Some carriers (~.C-~- live 20 - 25 years and nan exist without food for many years. In conclusion, the author describes preventive measures applied in the USSR. There are 2 photographs and 3 drawings. ASSOCTATTON: Akademiya mec-itsir-.6x-'kh nauk, SSM (USEER Acp-dlemy of Saieaces) Card 2/2 PIVLOVSKIY. He concludes that such agents as bacteria, parasites and viruses have accompanied animals and man from the very beginning of their existence. He also describes a few instances of harmless and useful symbioses. Together with co-researchers and other scientists, the author studied the natural nidi of infectious diseases on numercus expeditions in the USSR and abroad. He succeeded in estab- lishing such natural nidi for over 15 serious diseases, among them the seasonal encephalites, tick-caused diseases, yellow fever, rabies, leishmanioses, tularemia, plague, trichinoses, etc. The proper kn3wledge of such nidi of diseases becomes especially important when new areas are opened to settlement as was the case with the vi:-gin lands Card 1/2 and iis will be the cuee with the new industrial settlement I SOV/26-59-1-16/'34 ,F,pr a Many-Sided Solution of Biological Problems areas in the east of the USSR. This knowledge has also met with favorable acclaim and application in the ~,SR, ?-Ianj, Yugoslavia and Red China. The materializatinn of the author's system will depend greatly on the speed with which newly discovered nidi of diseases are reported to the Ministerstvo zdravookhraneniya SSSR (Ministry of Health of the USSR), and the related organizations of the other Soviet republics and the ensuing measures. N., Academician, Skrynnik, A. N. TITLE: Laboratory Observations on Ornithodorua Hermai Wheeler, '1935 PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 128, Nr 4, pp 863-864 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The species mentioned in the title in known to occur only in the USA. It lives there in the Western States (Refs 1, 4, 5) in altitudes between 1500 and 3300 m above sea level. In all Its stages of metamorphosis it is able to transmit spirochaeta of a special-species (Table 2). The three male and eight female animals that arrived in the authors' laboratory in February 1947, soon started reproduction. Within 11 years 4 generations developed. They lived on Guinea-piga and mice. They sucked during every season and generally were full with- in 30-40 minutes (grown-up animals sometimes within 1.5-2 hours). Some of the 0. hermai bred 10 years ago, are alive and still go on reproducing. Such a long life hitherto has not been known. The time of starvation for grown-ups also proved longer than 7 months (according to Ref 3). Unfed larvae died after 3-4 months, nymphs of the first stage Card 1/3 died at 260 after 5-7 months and at 15-18 0 after almost one I SOV/20-128-4-64/65 Laboratory Observations on Ornithodorus Uermai Wheeler, 1935 year. Nymphs of the third stage and grown-ups survived a starvation period of 3 years. Hungry females and those which never in their lives have been fed, are still capable of producing descendants fit for life. I dependence of reproduc- tion on the season could not be observed. Contrary to American publications 2 stages of larvae with 6 loge were not observed. Table I shows the period between feeding and skinning. A compariaon is given with other Ornithodorus species obseEved in the laboratory with regard to their development. At 2 6 the development of 0. hormal takoe 56-93 days from the be- ginning of oviposition to the development of imagoos from nymphs of the second stage, and 73-156 days in the third nymph stage, 156-258 days in case of a fourth nymph stage. At room temperature the nymph stage may last for 7 years when the feeding intervals are long. Spirochaeta of 5 other species of ticks are not transmitted by 0. hermsi. There are 2 tables and 5 references.
