Preventing Soil Erosion in the Stavropol'skly.Xray- (Cont.)
have been damaged by heavy rains. "Rivulet" erosion iu especially
harmful. During the last five years, 215 000 hectares of arable
soil have been damaged by wind erosion. Surface relief, type of
soils, and wind force determined the exteat of this erosion. With
respect to these factors, the territory can be divided into seven
erosional zones: 1) the Stavropol' Highland; 2) the Armavir wind gap
between the Stavropol' Plateau and the :_piedmont . part of the
territory where wind and water erosionarewell developed; 3) the
piedmont' zone; 4) the mountain zone with heavy water erosion-,
5) the steppe zone in the interstream area of the Terek and Kuma
Rivers where erosion is sporadic and depends on the rain intensity
and on strong eastern winds; 6) the very arid steppe zone in the
northeastern part of the territory and the winter pastures in the
Black Earth district, where eastern winds have caused heavy erosion;
7) the northern steppe zone. The territory must be, first of all
organized to combat erosion. Sections with slopes steeper than 26
require a number of different anti-erosion techniques. Steep slopes

should be plowed to form combs, contour furrows, zigzags, and
checkerboards, and they should be cultivated according to Malltsev's
method. Trees should be ylanted in the sands. Down-slope plowing
should be forbidden. Bringing of I-lowed and fallow protective zones
under crop rotation should be decreased where slopes increase in
steepness. The author presents a cartogram showing erosional zones.
