Loosjes, H. J. Vink (Philips Res. Repts, 1949, 4, 449), R. Forman (Phys. Rev.9 1954t 969 6, 1479) and other researchers considered the conductivity of an electron gas in the oxide pores in weak fields, when the current in the pores was proportional to the electric field and when the energy gained by the electrons along their free paths was small as compared to their thermal energy kT. 7his article considers the case of an arbitrary electric field, when the voltage drop along the free path in near or exceeding kT/q, where q iA the electron charge. An integral formula for La/l., is developed &M a table facilitating evaluation of the integrals is supplied; here La is the electron drift and 3o is the electron free path. An experimental BaSrCa-axide cathode was tested by Cordj/2 L 5139--66 ACCESSION NR: AP5026904 1 -usec pulses at a repeUtion rate of 50 cps, at 750-1150K, in fields up to 30 kv/cm strong. It was found that the experimental conductivity curves were in good agreement with theoretical curves for the fields up to about 4 kv/cm; the pore current reached values 4 times as high as the emission current. The electron free path and the work function of the oxide determined from the experimental current-voltage characteristics proved to be in good agreement with the values of these quantities determined from other independent measurements (thermo-eaf, resistance in Kagnetic field, etc.) of the same oxide specimens. Ed.: Vladimd-rov, V. T., Lt. Col.; Tech. Ed.: Mednikova, A. N. PURPOSE: This brochure is addressed to readers vho have completed the eighth or ninth grade of secondary school. Its purpose is to describe in simple and accessible form the principal semi-conductor devices. COVERAGE: The physical processes taking place in semiconductors are explainad,, and semiconductor instrument production is discussed. Designs of the most vidaly used semiconductor devices are described and examples are given of the practical utilization of semiconductors in the national econrAW. There is a brief rwilev of the developoent of the theory of insulators and conductors and of the suboequent development of the theory of semiconductors. The role of Russian scientlate In this field is emphasized. In their vork on semiconductors, Soviet scientists are credited vith having laid the foundations for a nev branch of physica. V.; 0 Moyzhes, B. Ya.; Petrov, 1. N.; Sorokin, 0. V.; Chudnovskiy, F. A. TITLE: Electrical conductivity and thermo-emi of a barium-strontium oxide in a magnetic field SOURCE: Radiotekhnika t elektronika, v. 9. no. 2, 1964, 300-307 TOPIC TAGS: electrical conductivity, thermo ernf, oxide coated cathode, barium strontium oxide, barium strontium oxide thermo emf, barium strontium oxide conductivity ABSTRACT: Measurements were taken oal factory specimens of Ba-Sr oxide, 100-200-microns thick, placed between two cylindrical nickel bases (see Enclosure 1) and subjected to a transverse magnetic field. One of the tubes was equipped with a ring anode and served to measure the thermo-emission from the Cord I/ I '-~- ACCESSION NR: AP4017600 side surface of the oxide. The effect of temperature and the magnetic field on the -resistivity and thermo-emf of the Ba-Sr oxide was investigated. Estimated from experimental results, the free-path length of an electron in the cathode pores is 4- 30 microns and the electron mobility is from 3. 5 x 10" to 2 x 105 cm'L/v sec for the various specimens. The thermodynamic work !unction, electron concentration, and conductivity are also estimated. It is inferred that the pores in the oxide cathode must be open and intercommundcating and, there- fore, that under total thermionic -current conditions, the electrons must be emitted by the entire near-surface layer of the oxide; this fact may, in part, explain the abnormally high Schottky effect in oxide cathodes. For layers deposited by spray- i ng, X was found to be within 0. 5- -8) - 10- 6. w/cm degrees. The low heat ox conductivity promotes substantial preheat of the oxide layer, especially with pulsed pickoff of current from the cathodo. A comparison was made of %,x values obtained with this procedure with the ni(~awjrernent made on the sarm, fipecimen at a tempera- ture close to room temperature and the results are given. TITLEj An achromatic half-wave plate SOURCEs Kristallografiya, v. 9, no. 3, 1964, 421-423 TOPIC TAGSs half wave plate, achromatic plate, polarized luminescence ABSTRACT: 0Half-wave plates are generally used to rotato plane polarized light through 90 , but existing plates of this type are strictly half-wave plates for only a single definite wavelength and can be used only in that restricted part of the spectrum. The authors point out that it is possible to compute, as was done by S. Pancharatnam for a quarter-wave plate (Proc. Indian Aced. Sci., 41A, 4, 137-144, 1955), an "achromatic" half-wave plate with a phase difference of 1800 for three different wavelengths. The authors made the computation, using elliptical waves, and a Poincare sphere. The achromatic plate is designed in the form of three half- wave plates arranged at definite angles to each other. The angles between the principal directions of the plates are so chosen that the aggregate gives a phase difference of 1800 for the three given wavelengths. As an example, the authors consider the wavelengths 425, 520p and 670 mt t, oompute the angle at which they must /2 ACCESSION NR: AP4039406 be joined (200), and find that the resulting plate will rotate the plane of polari- zation 901 for practically the entire range of wavelengths. The transmission of this plate for intermediate wavelengths (with polarizing prisms crossed), as computations show, will differ from complete transmission by only a few percent.
