to Ionizing Radiation"

Abstract: A shield for the protection of the testes of personnel exposed to
L.he action of ionizing radiation has been devised by the author and used
since 1942. It is believed to be the first device for the direct protection
of the gonads from radiation proposed so far. The protective device consists
,:)~ a lead shield 1 mm thick that is suitably shaped and folded. The lead
shield is lined with cloth. Instead of the shield of metallic lead, a layer
of lead rubber exerting an equal protective action can be used. Tests showed
that wearing devices of this type in addition to protective aprons provides
effective protection of personnel working with X-ray sources emitting radia-
tion of an Intensit UP to 150-200 kv. Figures and table, 11 references (2

ABSTRACT: The effect of a single fast neutron radiation dose on the
life expectancy and the morphological composition of peripheral blood
was studied in white rats. Animals (2-5-~ mos old) were irradiated
with a mixed beam of fast neutrons and ea.-,ma-quanta on an atomic
reactor with single doses ranging from 8.5 to 510 i-ads at 'he rate of

5.1 rad/min. The ratio of fast neutrons to gamnna-quanta in the beam
was 9:1 and the ave.-age energy of the beam was 2 Mlev. Biological
effectiveness of the fast neutrons was determined by Miller and
Tainter's method which finds the lethal dose that will kill 501% of the
animals within 15, 30, 6o, 120, 2J,-O, 360 and 420 days. Life expectan-
cy was also determined. Erythrocyte, laukocyte, neutrofil and
lymphocyte levels were investigated at different periods from 1 to 28

days before irradiation and every month for 25 nos after irradiation.
Result- show that the death of 50% of the animals within 15, 30, 6o,
120) 2ZO, 300 and 420 days is caused by these corresponding fast
neutron doses: 408, 408, 408, 380, 362, 316, a.-d 299 rads. With 170
and 340 rad doses some animals die oarly and others die later in the
exneri;ments. With no homogeneity in the life expectancy curve for
these two doses, a more detailed study of the types of death for tne
different time periods should be made. The shape of the dose-ef-fect
curve for the various peripheral blood cloments (neutro'Lils,
cytes, and erythrocytes) may be quite different for the same indices
depending on time of observation. In addition to radiation dose, the
regenerative and compensatory processes of the individual organism
also play an important role in determining the reaction of the
organism to fast neutron radiation doses. Orig. art. has: 5 figures,
