The average dates of those occurrences were determined for each place; the characteristic sums of negative temperatures were calculated for those days and statistically evaluated. The number Nu is defined by equation t7 qwd Nu . T37 , where qw denotes the thermal stress actirii- on the tube wall, d the diameter of the tube, A the coefficient of thermal Con- ductivity of the liquid, and 5 the mean temperature pressure in the section under consideration Equation (8) is developed for the local Card 1/2 number Nu under the given conditions Results of computations of the, Ab Beat Transfer During the Tuftlent Flowing of Liquid S/ I 70/59//C' 2 Vvtal in the Case of Sinusoidal Distribution of B014,'BO14 Thermal Stress Along a Tube number Nu in the case of sinusoidal thermal stress along a tube containing liquid metal is graphically represented in figure 1. Here the sinusoidal thermal stress exercises an increasing in- fluence with rising Reynolds number Furthermore, the temperature distribution along the tube is studied., The shift of the maximua~ temperature of the tube as dependent on the Reynolds number of the liquid metal is diagrammatically shown in figure 2 for various tube lengths, It was found that the calculated values are somewhat higher than the experimental ones, and that the maximum temperature is shifted toward the region of lower thermal stress. It results from the dependence of the number Wu on the Reynolds number (cf Fig 3) that the actual heat transfer at Vie point of maximum tempera- ture of the tube does not greatly difier from the value calculatel for uniform thermal stress. This difference diminishes with ir.- creasing Reynolds number. V., Professor TITLE: 'tlr~ ~em~so Astronautics (Oanovnyye problemy kosmonavtiki) PERIODICAL: Vestnik Akademii nauk SSSR 1958 Nr 6, pp. 28 - ~A ABSTRACT: The further development of astronautics depends on the atta:n- ing of the 3 critical cosmic speeds: 1) the circular speed of approximatAy 8 km/second,which is the minimum required for producing an artificial satellite of the earth; 2, the cosmic parabolic speed of approximately 11 km/second which is the minimum required for leaving the earth and converting the missile into a satellite of the sun, thus into an in- dependent planet and consequently to make it possible to effect a flight to other celestial bodies of our solar systemi 3) a cosmic hyperbolic speed of approximately 16-7 km per second, which is the minimum required for leaving our solax system for good and for going to the stars. The space ship will remain as satellite of the earth at speeds of apprnyimate- ly 8 to 11 km per second and will describe an elliptic tra- jectory which is the more extent, the higher is its speed. Card 1/4 At speeds of approximately 11,5 km to 16 km per second the
