TITLE: Technology of hot work hardening of steel during rolling and compres-
sion
SOURCE: Metalloved. i term. obrab. metallov, no, 2, 1964, 55-58
TOPIC TAGS: VLlsteel, martensite steel, austenite steel, steel rolling, steel
compression, steel strain hardening, steel work hardening
ABSTRACT: A technology for hot work hardening of steel during rolling and
compressiou was developed using martensite class VLl type steel for testing.
The carbon content in the austenite has a vital bearing upon the process after
work hardening had been attained. It was established that work hardening is
augmented with a carbon content up to 0. 57o. Steel wit!-i A carbon content
of 0.6% or more is subJect to brittle fracture after hot-work
harining-
Card
ACCESSION NR: AP4012434
The optimal
),carbon content in steel for hot work harderdrg is from 0. 45 to 0. 55% with best
hot work hardening attained with one roll pass. It was found that it is impossi-
ble to get a 9076 deformation with a single pass, but up to 8716 reduction with a
single pass with some small billets was obtained with rapid temperature rises
from 550 to 700C at the point of deformation. The sharp increase of tempera-
ture causes a partial recrystallization with ensuing reduction in work hardening.
The specific pressure also rises sharply at deformations above 8070. The
austenite which is most stable at 450C and least stable at 650C is preferably
deformed at temperature slightly above 450C to prevent small reductions in
temperature which may cause the austenite to transform. It is important that
during the hot work hardening the prescribed temperatures during rolling (500-
600C) be maintained without sharp heating and cooling. The austenite rolled with
several passes was found to be harder than that with only one pass. The two
rolling sequences which are given for this process are very complex, especially
if used in industrial conditions. Orig. art. has: 6 figures.

6olubility data show that in BaOH solutions in the range 1 - 18N
the solubility of zirconium hydroxide varies from 1.4 - 10-4 to
3.1 - 1o-3 g of Zr. and that of hafnium hydroxide from 3.4 - 10-4
to 7.1 - 10-3. The concentration of Me(OH 4 in NaOH solutions can-
not be higher than its solubility in water; the latter can be cal-
culated from the solubility product of Zr(OH) 4 in water, which is
equal to 3 - 10-26 [Abstractor's note: Data taken from Western 1i-

teraturej; the calculated Zr(OH) 4 concentration in water being
1.95 - 10-9. As the solubility increase of the investigated hydro-
xides is due mostly to complex ions formation, it follows that the
concentration of Me(OH) 4 is about lo5 times smaller than that of
the compley. ions and that the expression Me(OH) 4 in Eq. (2) can be
omitted. It is shown that in NaOH concentrations up to ION an on
Zr(OH)5 is formed an in higher concentration - the ion Zr(OH)6
further that an ion HfW) 5 is also formed in the range of NaOH
concentrations 1 - 10N. The solubility of hafnium hydroxide in Na-
OR solutions up to 12N is higher than that of Zr, but in higher
NaOH concentrations this solubility decreases; in the author's
opinion this is due to the formation of a complex compound - sodium
hydroxohafnate which is precipitated from concentrated NaOH solu-
tions: The authors obtained such precipitates from Hf(OH) 4 in
NaOH(15-19N). In different samples of these precipitates 2.3 - 2.5

The instability constant of Zr(OH) 5 ions was found to be slightly
larger than that of Hf(OE)5 (1.9 - lo-5*,nd 1.1 - lo-5 respective-
ly). There are 2 figures and 13 references: 5 Soviet-bloc and 8

TEXT: The authors wanted to determine the soltibility of Zr(OH)4 and
Hf(OH)4 in NaOH and tc clarify the comprsition of the resulting -,omp!-und6,
The solubility was determined at 2`50C in I - 18 N NaOH. The hydroxides
were obtained from the oxychlorides by precipitating them from aiftmort-i
by means ~f an aqueous solution. The solutions of the hydroxides in soda
lye showed no Tyndall effect. They were analyzed for NaOH. Zr, and Hf
Tn some experiments also Hf'81 was utjed. Measures were taken to av,--1A tnf-
