The causes of acute post-traumatLc renal failure may be avided into 2 groups;
(a) reflex failure ( in accordance with the experiments of Trueta et al.), anti (b)
toxic failure. Probably. the author's proposal to apply preventive novocaine blocks
in all patients with extensive injuries will lessen the danger of this serious com-
plication. This may be of importance in the case of extensive traumata. The Hymp-
torns and treatment of patients with post-traumatic renal failure are also Ui6cussed.

A defective setting of the eye balls was due to the absence of the lower rectus
muscle. The ooeration consisted of the shortening of Tenon's capsule and of sew-
ing it in the proper pla ce destined for this muscle. Good effect is claimed.

ABSTRACT: On the basis of the hydrod / characteristics of B. Wagennigen-type
ynami
propellers, over 800 propellers have been calculated by the standard method used in
material-strength calculations. The calculations, which included all ranges of
geometric, kinematic, and dynamic characteristics, were used for deducing a new
formula for determining the minimum allowable thickness for a propeller blade (ice-
reinforcement classification "zero"). The mean error of the new formula is nearly 22,
and the maximum error does not exceed 52. The new formula has been developed
primarily for the use of classification institutions; however, due to its simplicity
and accuracy, it may replace in many cases the generally used strength-calculation

for the Polish register of ships. The solution of suitable ship propellers for
strength -nalrois had to be based on data of load variations In propeller blades with
respect to operating conditions and geometric parameters. The problem was confined
to a determination of the effect of hydrodynamic coefficients an the variation of
banding noments in propeller blades. This approach made, It possible to take into

ABSTRACT: The use of piezoelectric pickoffs for measuring pressure changes is not
new. Detectors, in vhich the sensitive element was a quartz crystal, vere used
at first. Many difficulties vere encountered with the use of such gauges. Only
the use of cesmets made out of piezoelectric materials resolved this problem.
Barium titanate Is the most popular material used for this purpose. The sensitive
element in the gauges is primarily made as a circular disk in the case of aerody-
naftic measurements. The thickness ranges from fractions of a M1111 ter to several
..(millimeters. Spherical and tubular gauges are also employed, but to a wch lesser

extent. Present work is basically of an experimental nature dealing with two prob-
lems associated with the practical application of piezoelectric transducers for mea-
suring rapidly changing pressures. The effect of the transducer's vibration upon
the measurements and methods for eliminating or reducing the harmful effects of the
transducer housing on the measured value are discussed. The quasi-static and
direct insertion in shock tube methods for calibrating the transducer are given.
Both of these methods yield identical results. The quasi-static method appears
to be better suited for a broader application since the calibration device used
with this method is very simple. On the other hand, if further testings writh the
transducers are to be carried out in the shock tube, the calibration can be effected
in the tube. Calibration in the tube has the advantage over the quasi-static method
in that the transducer's response time can be measured by positioning it in the back
side. The transducer readout has a linear characteristic over the entire measuring
range. The dependency of the transducer's sensitivity upon its thickness agrees
with theory. First part of the article gives some theoretical relationships for
piezoelectric transducers, barium titanate in particular. Orig. art. has: 13 figures
