ABSTRACT: Experiments were performed on young adult men in order ,,# test the
effects of carbon monoxide on certain blochemicill indices. Each subject
participated in an eight-hr background experiment (effect of hermeti-
zation) and an eight-hr experiment on the effects of carbon monoxide. A
carbon monoxide concentration corresponds to the concentration of carbon
-monoxide exhaled by humans. The C02 concentration in the chamber did

Ity was 50-60%. The catalyzing activity of the blood, the activity of cho-
linestume In UmA swum, and the carboxyhemoglobin content of blood were
measured In all subjects before and after the experiment. In addition
standard EKG, blood pressure, oxygen consumption, and oxygen utiliza-
Mon were also measured. The subjects were also givc~ -Mathematical
problems to solve.
After an exposure of sfiK to seven hours, the subjects manifested
.certain. functional shifts in the cardiovascular system and external ren-
piration, and also an increase in errors in test performance. The 13, R,
and T points of the EKG showed a drop in voltage. The QRS complex
i tended to expand (sometimes accompanied by an increased heart rate).
The number of errors in all arithmetic tests showed a substantial increase.
After an eight-hr exposure to carbon monkiiiidc,- the'-carboxyhemo'-
globin content of the blood increased from 0. 66 -+ 0.-056% to 1. 5 8 *.0. 43%.
This was accompanied by a statistically significant increase in the cho-- -
.-linesterase acti-vity of the blood serum. The catalyzing activity of the
blood did,not change.

ABSTRACT: The combined effect on animal organisms of the chemical substances
formed by the degradation of some 14 polymers at temperatures in excess
of 40'C was studied in a 25-day experiment.
Analysis of air from the chamber containing 80 laboratory animals showed
the following: acrylonitrile 2. 8 1. 7 mg/m3; aldehydes, 0. 02 0. 01
mg1m3; ammonia, 4.6 l.3 mg/m3; acetone 1. 07 0.6 mf/m3; &butylphtha-
late, 3. 7 0. 4 mgIM3-; Bulphur dioxide, 1. 77 J 0. 8 mg/m* carbon monoxide,

19. 1 1. 3 mg/m hydrocarbons, 600 216 mg/rn3; hydrogen chloride,
2. 46 1. 2 mg/m3; epichlorhydrine, 0. 33 J 0. 08 mg/m3; ethyl acetate,
1. 61 0. 6 mg/m 3; and ethylene glycol, 0. 7 0. 4 mg/m3.
Carbon dioxide content varied up to a maximum of 1016, oxygen content
was 21%, and the relative humidity varied from 60 to 80%.
Blood studies conducted on the animals included erythrocyte count,
leukocyte count, reticulocyte cou. it, atid hemoglobin determinationii, as well,
as duration of bleeding, rate of coagulation, prothrombin time, thrombocyte
count, and blood viscosity. Ability to synthesize hippuric from benzoic acid
was taken as an index of the functional state of the liver.
In addition, observations were made of behavior and general conditions
of the animals. dynamics of weight changes, tolerance to physical atress,
and oxygen requirement. Relative weights of internal organs were determined.
The experimental animals were observed preceding, durirg, and for 14
days after the experiment.
Prolonged continuous exposure of the animals to the chemical cubstances
liberated by the polymers produced nonspecific functional shifts.

CNS effects included subcortical irritation and weakening of cortical sub-
ordination function. This resulted in intersection of extensor and nexor motor
chronaxy curves, lowered susceptibility to brain stem hexanol narcosis,
and increased tolerance to physical stress.
Peripheral blood studies showed increased er)throcyte, hernoglobin,
and thrombocyte counts.
These CN3 and peripheral blood shifts were unstable and nonspecific
and should be regarded as an adaptation reaction of the organism to the
presence of gaseb released by polymer materials. This interpretation is
supported by full restoration of the altered functions and i.idices tu the initial
state within 14 days after the end of the experiment.
It in concluded that the investigaled polymers can be used in space cabins
so long cts the gasen they liberate are scrubbed from the cabin air before they
attain the-maximum permissible concentration for amall closed compartmento .

MPIC TAM: cathode polarization, palladium, electrodeposition
!ABSTAACT: In order to elucidate the pmeesses taking place during electrodeposi-
itlov of palladium from phosphate solutions, the cathodic polarization of this metal
was measured as a function of the composition, temperature, and rate of stirring of
:"w electrolyte. 7be following electrolyte compositions were employed (in g/1):
,(&) Pd (am PdC12), 4.0; Va2HPOh-l2"2O- 100', (NHj0)2NFOj0, 20; NH4C1, 25; W Pd (as
ANC12), 4-0; X02HPOk-l2H2O9 100; (NH4)2HPOh, 20; C&NSCODH, 2.5. It was found that
:the cathodic polarization curves consist of four main branches. The metal deposi-

takes plow en the second branch, which Is separated from the steady state po-
t*ntial of the electrode by more than 0.4 v. Replacement of ammonium chloride of
~bsnsolc acid causes the cathodic polarization of palladium to Increase. Using a
i
;ts"erstwis-kinatic method and a r*tating disc cathode, the authors showed that the
4electrodspositlon Is associated with concentration and 4:hemical polarization. The
I
utw* of polorlsatLon changes with the potential and solution composition. On the
fbeals of the results, It Is postulated that the substantial cathodic polarization
,in phosphate electrolytes Is due to the passivation of the electrode surface during
'electrolysis. Orft. wt. bast 9 figures, I table.
