TITLEi Hoarth Blocks in Electric Furnaces with a Steel Core for
Copper Melting (Podovyy# kamni v elektropochakh so
stallnym sordechnikom dlya plavki medi)
PERIODICAL: Tsv*tnyye metally, 1959, Nr 4, pp 74-78 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The authors discuss the advantages of '.he "Skometa"
type copper-melting furnace (Fig 1) itt which the core-
containing heeirth block 13 not in direct contact with
the metal bath (Fig 2). The Elektropech' trest (trust)
recently d*silMed a 15-tonne furnace of thin type
(OKB-303) with a steel core and six inductots, An
experimental 1/8-scale furnace was built to Provide
experience in the USSR of this type and design data.
The authors describe thi,4 work in which three types of
hearth block were tested. The first was made of rammed
siliceous pap,te with manual tamping within the furnace;
the second consisted of specially moulded and fired
artificial-corundum blocks-, moulded but unfirQd
fireclay or talectrocorundum-base materials were used in
Card 1/2 the third. Me details of materials and methods are

tabulated. Preliminary tests showed the first two
types to be unsatisfactory, the fireclay variant of the
third type giving the beat results. Improved production
methods were developedi a semi-acid high-alumina
fireclay with quartz, tamped pneumatically into special
moulds (Fig 3) gave blocks with a life of 2.5 months.
The furnace atarting-procedure was designed to avoid the
formation of air pockets in the block channels. The
authors stress the importance of avoiding copl,,.~r-oxide
attack on the block and recommend that the block t-asing
should be attached, without intermediate flanges, to the
furnace casing. N.A.Finoganova and E.0 Shternbek of the
Norillskiy kombinat (Norillsk Combine) partiipated in
the work. There are 4 figures and 1 table.

Abstract: During the heatIng after the end of the exo-
thermic reaction) of a mixture of 0.2 mol of
30% HCHO with 0.1 mol of nitro-n-pent8ne (1)
Iii 20 ml of dioxane and I drop of (C H ) N at
70-750 for 3 hours, 2-nitro-2-n-buty?p~o~ane-
liol-1,3 (11) Is produced (yield, 74%; melting

point, 48-490). Similarly, from 1-nitro-r-
hexane, there Is obtained 2-nitro-2-n-
amy~gopanedlol-1,3 (Yield, 60%; melting point,
53-5) ). During the heatiiig (about 100 for 4
hoirs) of eyimolal quantities of II bY 30%
3CH0 and 25 NH40H, there are oftained 5-nitro-
n-butyltetrahydro-1,3-oxazine (III) (liquid),
and the hydrochloride of III (yield, 15~- melt-
ing point, 172-1740). 111 is produced aiso
(yield of t1le hydrochloride is 10%) by boiling
for 3 hours 0.1 mol of It 0.3 mol of 30% HCHO
and 0.1 Mol of 25% Ir'14OH; the picrate's melting
point Is 150-1510. The hydrochloriO~? of III,
during boiling with concentrated HC1 in 80%
alchool, hydrolyzes. separating HCHO and form-
ing 2-nitro-2-oxymethylhexylamine (IV). T!~,~
action of 30% HCHO on IV (the heating Is over

chloride (melting point, 105-106 ). knalogously
to III, there are formed from 1, HCHO end
methylamine (L+O% aqueous solution) or ethyl-
amine (33% aqueous solution); 3-methyl-5-nJtro-
5-n-butyltetrahydrooxazine-l,l (liqui.c,); t.,.e
hydrochloride (yield, 70%; melting point, 170-
1720); 3-ethyl-5-nitro-5-n-butyltetrahydro-
oxazine-1,3 (liquid); the hydrochloride (yield,
65%, melting point, 174-1760). Similarly, as
described above, from I -nitro-n-hexane there
are obtained: 2-nitro-2-n-amylpropanediol-1,3
(yield, 60%; melting point, 53-54%) tile hydro-
chloride of 5-nitro-5-n-amyltetrahyaro-l 3-
oxazine (yield, 1+%, melting point, 171+-1~5%);
the hydrochloride OC3-nitro-5-n-amyltetrahydro-

and the hydrochloride of 3-ethyl-5-nitro-5-n-
