experiments the Quthars found that physical exercise combined with appe-
tite depressants, and in some cases with steroids, helps maintain a.
favorable nitrogen balance and weight losses are primarily at the ex-
penss of fatty tissue. Use of thyroid prepa.retians in the absence of
hypottayroidism produces rapid weight losses, e.pproximatel~,~ twice as high
e.s in controls, and is shortly followed by symptoms of medication in-
duced hyperthyroidism. Dora recent experimental and clin~.cal data on
obesity pathogenesis indicate that the role of certain other factors
should be more carefully studied: regularity of meals, prolonged expo-
sur� tc- substances affeat.ing lipometa.bolism ~ e.g. DDT), stress stimuli,
and ab~~olute or relative defioienei�s of certain nutritional substances.
