ABSTRACT: A lower puncturing voltage due to formation of a dust coating on
precipitating electrodes is the most certain indicant of a reverse corona. in an
electrofilter. Investigations have revealed the following: (1) Influence of the
dust coating on the filter operation manifesto itself in the gap breakdown voltage
rather than in the coating resistance. (Z) Three sets of conditions in the
(increasing) moisture content of the gas should be di--tinguished- (a) presence
of the reverse-corona current and the breakdown voltage changing little with
increasing moisture content; (b) steeply rising breakdown voltage with

increasing moisture content and absence of the reverse-corona current; (c) no
effect of the dust coating on the breakdown voltage. (3) The optimum gas
conditions of the electrofilter for a given filter type may be determined on the
basis of the following laboratory data: (a) the reverse-corona effect is
equivalent to a positive-point effect, the point being the same in all filter
designs; (b) the effect of the coating thickness on the breakdown voltage
remains the same for any distance between the electrodes; (c) the filter
current has no effect on its breakdown voltage; (d) the breakdown voltage
uniquely depends on the resistivity of the coating. (4) With good cleaning of
electrodes (with thin coatings), an effective operation is possible with lower
moisture contents than those observed in most e3dsting electrofilters.

(Avtomaticheskoye regulirovaniye napryazheniya na

PERIODICAL: TavetnyyeMetally, 1958, Nr.8, pp.45-50 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The maximal voltage which can be applied to the electrodes
of an electrostatic precipitator depends on the properties
of the gas and the conductivity of the dust layer. The
author has developed an attachment to type AF-18 instal-
lations, widely used in the USSR, or to older type TU-200
installations. The attachment automatically maintains the
highest permissible voltage with interruptions of current
not exceeding 0.3 seconds. Two variants of the attach-
ment have been under test at the Podollskiy tin works for
four months. The autotransformer commutator is rotated
by a type IM-2/2.5 actuating mechanism through a 15:2
gear, with provision of limit switches, a brake and a
shaft-position transducer (Fig.1). The electrical

starter and a type MRV-27 motor time relay. Tests with
the attachment have shown that the type EF-41 relay is
often defective and that in general better qualified workers
are required for either of the two variants tested than
before automation. An editorial note draws attention to
the advantages of automating high-voltage installations
and urges that a rapid choice of method followed by
production and testing should be adopted. There are

TITLE: Prevention of defects due to films in the production
of castings from alloy steels
SIOURCE: Defekty otlivok i inery ikh pre&prezhdeniya.
Ed. by A-V. Lakedemonskiy. Moscow, Mashgiz, 1962.124-131
TEXT: Defects in the form of non-rnetallic films along grain
boundaries were investigated. Films taken from the surface of
liquid steel I Y% 15 H 15 Y, 3TA (lKhl5Nl5K3TL) and from specimens out
out from castings, showed that these contained chromium and "iron
oxides and chromite. Films formed in carbon steels contained iron
and silicon oxides. The oxide nature of the defect was also
confirmed indirectly by analyses of ga.~es extracted from specimens
with and without the defect. It was established by experiment that
such films form as a result of oxidation of the surface of the
liquid steel with atmospheric oxygen during cooling. An additional
casting property criterion, the "tendency to film formation", is
proposed, defined as the temperature to which a steel has to be
cooled in order that the formation of the film on its surface is

completed. Testing for this property is based on the sharp change
in the emission curve of the alloy at the instant when the film is
formed. The apparatus developed.for this purpose records the heat
emission from the surface of a molten specimen by means of four
series connected thermocouples and a recording potentiometer.
The following factors were found to have an influence on the
tendency to film formation: chemical composition; repeated
reheating; deoxidation; gaseous medium over the steel surface;
introduction into the steel of elements with a high vapour pressure;
presence of fluid slag on the surface; coating of moulds with
substances on combustion of which a protective atmosphere is formed.
Easily-oxidising alloying elements (aluminium, chromium, titanium)
increase the tendency to film formation; nickel, cobalt, silicon,
molybdenum and manganese reduce it. Tests of the effectiveness of
various preventive measures (increased temperature and rate of
casting; introduction into the mould of high vapour prea8ur:--
metals - lead, antimony, bismuth; addition to the mould -.1 powdered
slag forming materials to form a low melting slag; c;~ating into
moulds filled with argon; coating of moulds with n3i.terials forming
a protective atmo:;phere ~n combustion) indicated that the best

results are obtained if the mould is coated with tar; this has no
adverse influence on the mechanical properties at'normal and
elevated temperatures and the gas content. Cr, Ti and Al cause
formation of a strong, thick film reducing appreciably the
fluidity; Ni, Co, and Mo improve fluidity.* In a reducing
atmosphere chromium-containing steels have the same or even a
somewhat higher fluidity than carbon steel in a normal atmosphere
at equal over-heating above the liquidus-point. Statistical
analysis of about 1300 fluidity determinations showed that iron-
base alloys, alloyed with weakly oxiding elements, have a low
degree of scatter as regards fluidity values and only small
volumes of the feed ends of the specimen remain unfilled. However,
in ferrous alloys which are alloyed with intensively oxiding
elements there is a high degree of scatter of the fluidity values
and large -volumes of the feed end of the specimen remain unfilled.
4 similar picture was obtained as regards accuracy of filling the
mould; Al, Cr and T! lead to inaccurate filling of the mould,
whilst Co, Ni, M and W improve the accuracy. Thus, tar coating
of moulds permits casting of steels which are difficult or

impossible to cast in the usual way.
