T"~ ~'j AUTHOR: Pod"yachikh, P. 2-1-3/9 TITLE: The Selec'ti-ve Experimental Census and Its Results (0b itogakh vyborochnoy probnoy perepisi naseleniya) PERIODICAL: Vestnik Statistiki, 1958, # 1, p 27-42 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The article deals with the experimental census carried out in August 1957 in 7 Soviet districts to gain experience and to ensure a smooth execution of the forthcoming USSR census in January 1959. The chosen districts were the following: the Chekhovskiy rayon, Moskovskaya oblast'; Kaytagskiy rayon, Dagestanskaya ASSR; Bolotninskiy rayon, Novosibirskaya oblast'; Stalinskiy rayon, Akmolinskaya oblaBt!, Kazakhskaya SSR; Tukumskiy rayon, Latviyskaya SSR; Nevskiy rayon, in Leningrad and the town of Stalino, Ukrainskaya SSR. The population of these districts totaled about 1,020,000 men, 87 % of them were living in towns and 13 ~o in rural districts. The Nevskiy district in Leningrad and the town of Stalino are industrial districts, the remaining agricultural ones. .The census was carried out by 2,300 men, 1,897 of them were census takers and 312 instructors and supervisors. With Card 112 the exception of 515 students from the Moscow Economical The Selective Experimental Census and Its Results 2-1-3/9 Statistics Institute, the quality of the census takers was not very high, some had not been acquainted with their duties, others did not attend the instruction meetings, many unsuitable census takers had.to be exchanged. The public information was bad, but in general the experimental census is told to have been successful, bec-ause it provided the necessary experience for the general census in January 1959. X-ray effect on the accumulation of tobacco mosaic virus i;1 isolated tobacco leaven SOURCE-. Akademiya nank SSSR. Institut genetiki. Trudy.. ro, ~8. 1961, 283 - 288 TEXT: The irradiation effect on leaves of Nicotiana tabacum, N~ glutinosa, and N. sylvestris was studied. One half of ripe leaves was irradiated be- tween moist filter paper in an Pyn(RUP) x-ray apparatus with 510 - 6AO kr/min, the other half being not irradiated, served as control, Dilute juice of tobacco leaves infested with the ordinary strain of tobacco mosaic. virus k'TMV) was the infection source. The relative virus quantity (virus titer) was determined by biological titration. Test series: Preliminary tests showed that virus accumulation at 26 - 280C renders t4tration possible already after 24 hr and that the virus content in the irradiated and non- irradiated leaf halves was balanced already after four days, Tesz series 1! Ii has been found that the virus titer in the irradiated leaf halves was significantly reduced in all cases at doses of 5 - 100 kr, when the leaves Card 1/4 32388 S/67o/6i/000/O2e/002/00'_1 X-ray effect on the accumulation... B103/B147 were infected 45 hr after irradiation, at the latest. The titer decreases with increasing irradiation dose. Doses of less than 25 kr have only a transitory effect. Such doses have no influence on the number of local infection foci in Nicotiana glutinosa. From 24 hr after infection onward, the differences in TTV accumulation are gradually blurred and disappear finally (this holds also for N. sylvestris infected by the Aucuba strain of TAIV). Preliminary irradiation of the leaves with 5 kr and more delays TMV accumulation- The Aucuba strain (contrary to the ordinary TMV strain) caused a necrotic reaction in IT. sylvestris, but also in this instance the number of necrotic foci was not affected by irradiation. The delayed TIMV accumulation in irradiated leaves of N. glutinosa and N. sylvestris as compared to the controls is proved, moreover, by the small size of the necrotic foci at the time of their formation. Test series II.- The leaf halves were irradiated with 15 kr 1, 21 5, 10, and 24 hr after infection., TYjV accumulation occurred at 280C. Titration was effected 24 h-- after irradiation,. It was not possible to establish a clear relation between titer reduction percentage and interval between infection and irradiation, Only a tendency to stronger inhibition of accumulation was found with shortening intervals between infection and irradiation. The infectious Card 2/4 32388 S/670/61/000/028/002/002 X-ray effect on the accumulation... B103/B147 form of TMV is not directly inactivated in infected leaves by doses of 15 kr. Thus, irradiation inhibits those multiplication processes of TMV occurring yet before the infectious form develops. The effect of irradi- ati.on on the transformation of the noninfectious into the infectious form was cleared up in a further test (the latter form has been identified by K. S. Sukhov and 0. S. Kapitsa, 1956. Dokl. AN SSSR, v. 110, no~ 3; 1959 in sb. "Nasledstvennost i izmenchivost' rasteniy, zhivotnykh i mikroorganiz- mcv" (Heredity and variability of plants, animals, and microorganisms), v. I .M.). The tobacco leaves infected with a heat-tolerant TMV strain were kept for 72 hr at 34.50C; the accumulation foci of the noninfectious form of TMV could be seen as yellow spots on the green background formed by the leaves. These spots were irradiated with 15 kr. The controls were non- irradiated equal pieces of the same leaves. Subsequently, both were ex- posed in the thermostat at 280C for 2 and 4 - 4.5 hr. The nonii, fectious form of TMV is rapidly converted to the infectious one. After 2 hr exposur!~ the TMV titer in the irradiated yellow spots decreased rapidly., The number, of necrotic foci related to the controls was 12 - 50% after 2 hr and 77 - 96% after 4 - 4.5 hr. Thus, the conversion of the noninfectious to the infectious form of TMV is inhibited by an irradiation dose of 15 kr. Card 3/4 32388 S/670/1611000102810021002 X-ray effect on the accumulation... B103/B147 Also the retardation of TMV accumulation by irradiation shortly after infection may be due to this inhibition. This inhibition effects, however, no reduction of the total TMV concentration in the leaf. The study was made under the supervision of K. S. Sukhov.. The difference I;etween the lower and upper temperature limits for the survival of ascaris and tricho- cephalus, the difference in the speed of their development under the influence of effective temperatures, the greater capacity of the ascaris' eggs to withstand drying and an atmosphere saturated with water-vapour. as well as a great differ- ence between the number of eggs laid by the females of ascaris and those of trichocephalus, and their unequal life-spans - aU these factors tend to explain the differing features of the epidemiology of ascariasis and trichuriasis. The principal differences are: (a) the boundary of distribution of ascariasis lies further north than that for trichuriasis; (b) in temperate areas a greater proportion of the popula- tion is afflicted with ascariasis and the intensity of infestation is much higher; (c) in subtropical and tropical zones this difference is effaced, and in some places. even, trichuriasis is more frequent; (d) absence of ascariasis in arid and hot regions, where the distribution of trichuriasis is either moderate or insigniiicant. Exact solutions are found for the plane wave by means of an auxiliary variable 0 (Eqs 13-25) and for the symmetric wave. The origin of the coordinates is placed at the source of waving as shown in Eqs (1) to (6) (Fig 1). The basic formulae are given as Eqs (7) to (12). The analysis of the complex variable 0 in relation to the variables t, x, z (Eqs 26-32) shows that the properties of the functions x(0) and t(O) can be shown as in Fig 2 for a given z. There are 2 figures and 6 Soviet references. TITILE: On a Formula Combining the Coefficients of Reflection and Refraction of a Head Wave PERIODICAL: Izvestiya Akademii nauk SSSR Seriya geofizicheskaya, 1959, Nr 11, PP 1560-1569 (USSR~ ABSTRACT: It is assumed that a plane boundary divides two elastic media denoted by n and n~+-l respectively. Their constants aiethe densitypi, and the velocities of longitu- dinal (aj = Cpj) and transverse (b waves (j = n or n + 1). The ront of the plane wavje=hCassja) relative velocity 1/0 and moves along the boundary. Fig 1 shows that there can be eight waves with a given () which can beldistinguished by the number of mediun (n or n + 1), sign (t 0), direction of motion and wave type (P or S). Each wave can thus be characterised by three suffixes: j, v, q, and the eight waves can produce eight possible combinations. The coefficients of reflection and refraction of these waves can be defined as Eq (1) where three pairs j1, ql; J29 q2; Ji q, can be distinguished. The first pair has a fixed value (a Card 1/3 given incident wave), the second pair can be found from V SOV/49-59-11-4/28 On a Formula Combining the Coefficients of Reflection and Refraction of a Head Wave the matrix, Eq (4) and the third pair can be determined from the four possible combinations. The solution of Eq (1) can be derived from Eq (6) and written in the final form as Eq (8). The coefficients of the head wave of the type q2 in a medium j2 correspond to the relative velocity l/e = Cr - cir qr as expressed by Eq (9), where Njlqlj2q2r (G) represents the coefficient Bjlqlj2q2 (8) as shown in Eq (10). Thus 64 combinations of j1, q1; jpv qr; j2, q2, are possible, which can be defined in relation to the systems N or M (Eqb(ll)). Thus the final formulae (16) to (19) can be 0 tained which express theielationship between the coefficients of head wave and those of reflected and refracted waves. corresponding s an example, the coefficients rjlqljrqrj2q2 to an incident head wave and its derivatives are Card 2/3 calculated for the media 1 and 2 (PP 1566-1569).
