SOV/126-7-6-4/24 AUTHORS: 11,fillner, A.S., Kovtun, Ye. F. and Popov, I. N. TITLE: Magnetic Anomalies of Magnetite PERIODICAL: Fizika metallov i metallovedeniye, 1959, Nr 6, pp 832-836 (USSR) ABSTRACT: Early work on magnetic properties of magnetite (Ref 1) showed that at 1200K there is a sudden decrease in magnetization, later found to coincide with sudden changes in other physical properties (Refs 2,3,4). The magnitude of the magnetization change depends on cooling conditions (Ref 7). Magnetic anisotropy changes with falling temperature (Ref 6). The object of the present work was to study the magnetic properties of magnetite at 75-1000K and the influence of change of sign of magnetic- anisotropy constants above the transition temperature on magnetic properties at lower tt,,~mperatLires. A natural rhombohedral magnetite single --r'~sTall and a magnetometer of the type described by Dotmt:nicali (Refs 7,8) were used. The whole swinging part of the magnetometer was kept in a vacuum (10-1 inin Hg) to avoid convection currents. The Card 1/3 specimen whose axis coincided witch the coil axis was Magnetic Anomalies of Magnetite SOV/126-7-6-4/24 cooled from room temperature to 750K in an external field of about 4oo oersted: Fig 2 shows curves of' magnetization against temperature for various cooling conditions. Similar results bnt with less change in magnetization were obtained with the I'll] axis along the coil axis, The authors give a graphical representation (Fig 3) of chariges in magnetization with field commutation, which also applies to brief switching off of the field. In the previous work A. S. Millner et al.(Ref 9) had dealt with the ef---ect of temperature of application of the magnetic field on tie value of the magnetization change, but with specimens with unknown crystallographic direction. In the Pre ent work the field was directed along the FjOO] or [11 directions, giving more regular results. Fig It shows plots of magnetization against temperature for 11003 directed field applied at 290, 95, 90 and 85*K. The transition of the magnetite through the null value of the anisotropy constant had no effect on these phenomena (in contrast to what occurred when the field was commutated at 75*K for specimens cooled in a field). The authors explain the Card 2/3 effect of the temperature of application of the field on Magnetic Anomalies of Magnetite SOV/126-7-6-11/24 the value of the magnetization jump below lOO*K in terms of the nonuniformity of the stoichiometric composition of the specimen over its whole volume. Ye. S. Borovik participated in the discussion of results. There are 4 figures and 10 references, 4 of which are Soviet, 3 French and 3 English. PATOL. 1958, 201t; (53-57) Seventy-two experiments were perforiii-eJ -on 56 rabbits and 16 cats. In 37 cases fever was produced by subcutaneous injection of 0.8 to 1.0 ml./kg. of anthrxx vac- cine; the other cases served as controls. Penicillin S35 (first series), white sulpha- chrysoidine S35 (second series) and M1211113204 (fOU1111 series) served as indicators for the barrier effect. The animals were killed 30 inin. to 3 hr. after the start of the experiment and examined for the pr&setice of the isotopes in the blood serum, CSF, aqueous humour of the eye, and pericardiac fluid; at tinies biological tests were performed to determine the presence of the experimental preparation. The permeability of the biological barriers examined was increased by fever to 1.4 to 2 times for penicillin S35, l.8 to 1.9 times for white sulphachrysoidine S35 and 1.2 to 1.5 times for the radioactive phosphc~rus: White sulphachrysoidine S35passes the barrier in greater quantities than penicillin S35 and raoiophosphorus. The ves- sels of the pericardium and epicardium have no barrier function because they let -through all indicators used. Brandt Berlin (V, 50; .4 22(l) SOV/47-'JQ,-2-lQ,/71 AUTHOR: Popov, T.P. TITLE': The Form Cutting of Glass P&fIC,D-I GAL: Fizika v shkole, 3959, Nr 3, P ?5 (USSIZ) ABSTRACT: The author describes a special method of glass form cutting. Finely Ground charcoal powder (or better- norit powder) is mixed with a warm thick paste, or with -lue from cherry and Dlum trees. Thin charcoal U strips 3 to 5 cm long, which nust be well dried, are made from the dou,-:,hlike mass. The glass has to be out with a sharp file. The en.1 of a charcoal strip is kindled and, when smouldering, is moved along the crack formed by the fil e in the direction in which the glass must be cut. This operation results in a deepening of the crack. Rabbits and rats were kept in a pressure chamber at 260 and 190 mm Hg (corresponding to 8000 and 9800 m) for two hours. The amount of trace elements in various organs was determined colorimetrically. At 8000 m elevation, the activity of cytochrome oxidase, succinodehydrogenase, and catalase, and the concentration of trace elements increased in most of the tissues studied (including blood,'brain, heart, liver, kidneya, and muscles). For example, at 9800 m the activity of cytochrome oxidase decreased, especially in the liver, kidneys, and brain. At the same time, the amount of copper in the blood increased somewhat. The conditions required for the utilization of. ammunlated-ni-trogen-by the microorganisms of the rumen were set up. Urea can be of great assistance in the feeding of dairy and beef cattle. MED. 1956, 7/12 (46-51) Tables I A detailed repo.-t is given of important, sometimes contradictory data of the literature on the frequency of the disease, its unilateral or bilateral localization, involvement of the testis etc. This is followed by a discussion of the differential diagnosis between tuberculous epididymitis of acute onset and an ordinary inflam- mation of the epididymis. In 12-145-6 of patients operated on for epididyrnitis by mentioned authors (548 cases), the diagnosis of acute tuberculous epididymitis was not confirmed by the pathologist. The opinion of many authors that the best treatment of tuberculous epididymitis is removal of the affected epididymis, is regarded with reserve. At a certain stage of the disease, conservative treatment with modern tube rculo statics provides very good results. To prove this, 30 students with tuberculous epididymitis were treated by this method at the students' Policlinic, Sofia. Besides all the usual examinations ('directed' past history, clinical and laboratory examinations, X-ray), tuberculin tests were employed in all the cases; this test is particularly recommended. To distinguish tuberculous from non-specific epididymitis, the spermatic cord was blocked with 30 to 40 ml. of a 0.25% procaine solution with the addition of 100,000 U. penicillin: in non- specific inflammation, block usually gives a quick result - the temperature is lowered, swellings and pain are reduced and after 10-15 days, the inflammatory process is usually abated but, in acute tuberculous epididymitis, block does not lead to the above-mentioned results, the process becomes chronic and finally the hard, nodular infiltrate which is characteristic of tuberculous epididymitis, develops. In 3 chronic cases, in which epididymitis was the first manifestation of the tuberculous disease, puncture biopsy was ased and confirmed the diagno3is in 2 cases. During treatment of the 30 patients, 5 developed fistulas (in 4 cases of acute epididymitis in the 4th month of the disease and in 1 chronic case after a year). The fistulas of the first-mentioned 4 cases were closed by appropriate conservative treatment, the 5th case was operated on. The patients were followed- up for 2 yr.: in 21 (70%), the inflammatory process was completely regressed, the other 9 are regressing. Three patients have been operated on (refractory fistulization or repeated exacerbation of the process). In 2patients the other epididymis was affected for a certain period postoperatively.
