!a living organism has been proven to be a sensitive test
affiliated with the determination of the HPC (maximum per-
missible concentration) of a series of tissues. Experiments
were conducted with white rate: in one group, a water solution'
of-'2,4*dihitrophenol (DNP10 with a concentration of 1/2 LD~,
(1.5 mg/kg) was injected in the course of 80 days; in the
second group the same dosage of DNP11 was injected once; the
third'igroup was the control and received no injection. A
specially constructed organic glass chamber which supplied
'100Z oxygen at a rate of 5 I/min, thus allowing a full ex-
change of the air with respired CO , was used. An electronic I

Abstract The presence of NaCl makes the juice turbid and causes
the formation of a white deposit on the can bottom in
canned green peas. It -was established that it is possi-
ble to shorten the sterilization duration and, consequen-
tly, to improve the quality of this canned food and to de-
crease the content of NaCl in the Juice, especially if the
canned food was sterilized 20 min. or longer.

ABSTRACT: Much attention has in recent times been paid to the study of ternites,
ants, bees, swarm-ing locusts, and other kinds of the so-called in-
sect colonies, as w5ll -as tc the study of their behaviour and evolu=
tion. At Paris the 3. congress of the International Society for the
study of the so-called insect coil.-,n"Ies took pla;e this surnmer. The
congress was attended by delegates from Austria, Eng-land, Belgium, the
German Democratic Republic, Dennark, Ita3y, the LEM, U3A, France, the
German Federal Republic, and Switzerland. The Soviet delegation consi=
sted of V. V. 1"coov, Corres.-onding Member of the AN USSR, and the au-
thor of this article. The cong-ress lasted 5 days (July 9 - July 12).
There were 4 plenary and 6 sectional sessiorB. The congress was opened
by the president of the soziety, the well-known Frencb scientist Pierre
rGrazeet. Besides lectures, 3 good scientific filmF were shown: on the
life of tropical termites, on the bunilding of nests by fcrest ants,
and on the breeding biology of certain grasshoppers. in the sectional

bees, bumble-bees, wasps and locusts mwring in swarms were dealt with.
Also such problems as the. struggle again.91, termites, which are the
greatest danger to wooden birildings in tropilnal and subt.opical re=
gions-, the quality of the honey gehered by the domestic bee from va=
rions plants, etc. was discussed. In one of the sectional sessions V.
V. Popov spoke about IThe NcoturnaI Gathering of 5ome Individual ~e-eslf.
In e-VZLTting lecture.3, which wr-.:,-& based upon numerous experiments, and
which were carried out by means of -ap-tc-clate technical devices, gave
rise to lively discussions. The congress was marked by a friendly and
buainesslike atmosphere, a fact that was due, last but not least, to
its, good preparation and to the friendliness and hospitality of the
French colleagues. During the final plenary sessions the officers of
the society were nevly elected. P. Grasse was re-electued as president,
and G. FdcharJ. was elected general secretary. The congress approv(.d of
the organization of a section for gregazious insects in the ALII-Micm
Entomological Society in the USSR, A-fter the end of the congress the
participants were able to make themse2:res acquainted with the collec=
tions of some types of insects ir, the National Natural History Museum,
as weLk as with the work carried out in a numb-e-~ of laboratories of
the Sorbonne and in the centralstation of bee culture near Paris. An

ments are being carried out, for the purpose of the investigation of
honey-gathering. Participation in the congress as well as visits paid
to various French scientific institutes promoted the establishment of
closer connections between Soviet scientists and those of other coun-
tries.
