The following solutions-were prepared: ZftSO 0.1896 moles, CdSO

0.1916 moles, NaOH - 0.0998-n, 10% sodium nitrate and a saturated CaCl 2
solution. The molarity of the zinc salt solution was determined by 'he
citrate method and at-the same time, by titrating with Trilon. The data
obtained by the two methods are in agrqement. The molarity of the cadnium
solution was determined by the method described in Ref. 4, i.e., in the
solution of cadmium sulfide Ahooe titer was found by electrolysis. A

less than 30%. A number 'of titrations was carried out with equal zinc-salt-

Thus:', It is possible to titrate the sum Zn + Cd. Since zinc is also
titr"ated in an independent sample the amount of cadmium can be determined
as t;he difference (Table 2). This method.is fairly accurate. If apart-from
zinc7 and cadmium the solution also contains acid, it can be titrated in
advance with methyl orange as indicator. The authors found that the solu-
tio
n; in which thd acid was determined, can also be used to determine Zn
or 7,,n + Cd, since the slightly yellov color of methyl orange does not
affect titration with phenol phthalein. There are 2 tables and 4 Soviet
references.

ABSTRACI: The photosynthesis intensity of the frost-resistant t'ype
of the common AntonovIca apple tree (I) durin- August - October is
-:hi-her than that of the non-frost-resisting Renet.Simirenko (II),
Throughout the year, the usual content of chlorophylis a and b (in
wei-ht units) in the skin, buds and leaves in the majority of cases
is higher in I than in II. The exposure for 4 to 6 hours of the
foliage disks to a 0.01~, solution of (NH SO under dark or light

conditions produce an increase in chloro gontent in I and a
decrease in I!, particularly under light conditions. As a rule the
carotenoid content and the activities of chlorophyllase, ascorbophyllase

and peroxidase is decreased under light and increased under dark
conditions. The authors explain the increase of photosrnthezis inten-
sity in I by the greater photoresiatance of the chlorophyll--albumen I
comiplex and a higher level of oxidizing-reducing processes. The I
content o"" albumen In leaves before the end of August is greater in I,
after which time It is greater in II. However, the accumulat-ion of
glucose is in reverse ratio: It is greater in II earlier In the year,
and greater in 1 in the autumn. The authors recommend the use of the
above-indicated physiological-biological indexes for diagnosing the
frost-resistant degree of plants in comparing them with local varieties!

Abstract: In 1955, in the Main Botanical Garden of the Acad-
emy of Sciences USSR, there were discovered plants
of the bent grass, Agrostis tenuis Sibth., with
the characteristic black galls on the leaves and
stems of the panicles. A microscopic examination
indicated that, In some cases,, the galls appear as
stromata with pycnidia of the fungus Dilophospora
alopecuri (Fr.) Fck.; in other cases, they are
filled with nematodes, and in still other cases,

simultaneously with the nematodes. For the first
time, D. alopecurt was studied on Alopecurus
pratensis Fries In 1928. The fungus infects an
