In the spectra of the un- saturated sulfur compound (delta - dilrjdrothiopyrane) two facts are apparent: a) the sum of the line intensiti 'es for the C-S bond is much less than that of the saturated compounds; b) the intensity of the '~, FD-773 et USSRI tics OP '~-e'-, tn 3 s,-- C, Abs Jour -15Y, Referat No 3, !'1 -,1854 Author kzishin, P.A., Rambidi, N.G., Korob,-'t*'s~Ta, 1.K. The data obtained were applied to valent oscilla- tions of C - 3 bonds in spectra of the heterocycles investigated. It was found that the presence in the molecule of sulfur containing multiple bond compounds or phenyl groups leads to reaction between them and the C - S bond the appearance of which in the spectrum depends upon the mutual dis- position and structure of the molecule. The electrono- grams of the cesium halide vapors show similar distribution and intensity of electron dispersion. Theoretical plots of the. intensity of the electron dispersion were calculated for the diatomic CsX molecule using the following simplified equations: sinsr ~Ln i I '- I mol A 2 The calculation of the distance between the two atoms in these molecules of cesium halide was carried out using the method of approximation. These calculations yielded the following results for the atomic separations in the cesium halide molecules: CsF = 2-335~tO-Oi9 X, CsCl = 2.906+0.13 X, CsBr - 3.081+0.008 ~X Card 112 and CsJ 3.3070-015 9. Ser-lys, matematiki, mekhaniki, astronomii4 fiziki, khimii, 1958, Nr 6, pp 223 - 230 (USSR) ABSTRACTt This paper was read in the electronographic aection of the 6th Conference on the use of X-ray3 for the exAminp-tion of materials, (T-eningrad 1958). The elea-tronographic investigaticrs of the molecular structure of the compounds mentioned above Hendriks, Mosley Ref 1) and' the investigations made or; the basis of other methods (Refs 4,5,6,7,8) (see table) have shown that there are different distances between metal and halcgen, *-1,Uch was ascribed to.'the existence and to the formation of associates In the vapor of the halides of the basio element-g. The Authors tried in this article, to explain the deviaii=s existing bet-ieen the results obtained electronographic&lly and radioappetroscopically, and -to find the Card 114 geometrical configuratioa of a dimer molecule of the said Electrono6raphic Investigation of the Structure of the SCI/55-58-6-2ri/31 Molecule of the Vaporous Halides Basic Elements Card 2/4 compound. For these investigation the electronograp'n MGU was used. To evaporate the metal-halides a h"ting system was employed based on the bombardment by electrons. The appt.-ratus and the methods used in this connection are accurately de3cribed in reference 10. All electron diffraction pictures takent CC&., Mal, KsHal, NaHal, and LiHal, with the eXception of the bromide WA the iodide of U showed a sinusoidal extinction in their intensity distribution. The results which were obtained by ceans of the theoretical spreading curves of the intensity with bi-atomic molecules, have been compiled in a table together with other comparative data from publications (Refa 1 and 4) (Ref 1: see above, Ref 4 investigation with microwaves). The table zhowz the variation in the difference between the intermolecular distance Me=X for the said metal-halides o; the values Ref 4 and of ti-4 present investigation; from 0.04 1 (Cst Rb-salts) to 0.15 f (Li-salts)o This variation has.been ascribed to the association of the molecules'.i in the vapor. The effective intensity of the electron scattering would be com;-oned of the &;attering of the monomers and off the associates (M82X2). Cn the basis of the. theoretical curves having. a certain content of monomers and dimers (see also Pij.; 1), and of, Electronographic Investigation.of the Structure of the WV/55-58-6-28/31 Molecule of the Vaporous Halides of Basic Elements the known distances Me-X*r in the monomers and dimers the real distance rseff can be determined, and thus also (Fig 2) the degree of the dimerization. The differenae of the results in the three investigations compared, is explained by,the different dixerization degree of the vapors investigated, this difference being due to the various sections of the evaporating psocess in which the electron diffraction pictures were taken. Me geometrical configuration of the individual atoms in the dimers of the examples UF, and Lipr, and U F2 has been determined by way of the comparison of the theoretical spreading curves for various, distances r(I-X) with the experimental spreading carves-(see Pigs 4, 5,6). It is only regrettable that this method does riot permit them,' We de 'termination of all three parameters of a dimer Ue-Ne, Ke-Z and X-X. TITLEt Electronodiffraction Study of Lithium Oxide (Elektronograficheskoye issledovaniye stroyeniya molekuly okisi litiya) PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii Nauk SSSR, 1958, Vol. .118, Nr 5, PP-973-976 (USSR) ABSTRAM In the present work the geQ-metric structure of the Li2 0 mole- cule is determined experimentally by means of the method of diffraction of fast electrons ona vapor jet of the material to be investigated. Experiments were carried out with the electronodiffraction equipment of the Moscow State University Jor the investigation of the'structure of the molecules of not volatile compounds. The vapor jet off the material to be investigated was produced by means of a high te=perature vaporizer with heating of the ampule by electron bombardment. a molybdenum ampule at Lithium oxide was vaporized from 0 temperatures,of - 1300 to - 1350 C. The elec-tronographs of Card 1/3 the vapors were recorded on photographic plates. The lithium 20-118-5-35/59 Electronodiffraction Study of Lithium Oxide oxide preparation (purity 99,62 %) used here was produced by thermal decomposition of lithium nitrate in a silver crucible 7 series of electronographs each/with 2 - 3 recordings of different wave lengths of the electrons (within the values X - 0,0443 and )L - 0,0488 R) were produced from the vapors of lithium oxide. The electronographs of the vapors had 3 to 4distinct interference rings each, in the case of.which intensity distribution of the scattered electrons in the diffraction pattern differs only little from a damped har- monic function. These electronographs were then elaborated by means of the method of the radical distribution and the method of successive approximations. Starting with the tri- angulaE model of the lithium oxide moleaule with an angle of 110 between Li - 0 - bindings the value r(Li - 0)- 1,82 + 0,'02 1 of the interatomic distance Li - 0 is found by the method of successive approximations. Comparing the here found distance of 1,82 in the molecule of the phase with the distance 2,00 of the atoms in the crystal lattice the characteristic difference of 10 % given also in the technical, publications for certaincompounds is found. Finally the authors compare the experimental value of the Card 213 interatomic distance Li 0 with the evaluation of this llr4Fel'e-l'-"- ' -' - - -- - - - -- - AUTHORS,: Akishin, P.A., Rambidi, N.G. The observations were carried out by the Horrebow- -Talcott method according to the Poltava program with a transit Instrument AP 100 manufactured at the state enterprise K. Zeiss In Jena. Altogether 1,150 latitude pairs and 7j8 pairs for determining the value of a micrometer screw revolution were processed. The accuracy of determining the mean value of the observatory ~latltude amounts to + Ol.'014 (rms error). It is pointed out that the possible systematic,er- ror in the values of the micrometer screw pitch, estimated individnally for the three periods and taken off for repairs and cleaning, should not affect the variation curve of the latitude. Observations of the latitude were con- ducted according to the program by Fedorov (Ref. 9t Ye. P. Fedorovs Novaya programma dlya, sluzhby shiroty i yeye ispytaniye v Poltuave.
