Abstract From the principal formulas of geometrical optics for d
system of two thin lenses, a formula is derived for the
calculation of the focal distances of lenses and the op-
tical interval of this system, provided the focal dis-
tance of the system is specified and along vith the dis-

plane of the system. At the end of the article examples
are given for the calculations of objectives.

ABSTRACT: The German (Hamburg) method for the determination of
alkalies adsorbed on Mn02 by reduction with H followed
by extraction with water and -titration of t~~ bases
has been replaced by the much quicker reduction with
carbon.
Experimental Reduction. Powdered charcoal was prepared
from the remnants of charcoal used for spectral analysis
.(CKD - Stalingrad), separated from the used part and
ground in a porcelain mortar. The fraction passing me-sh.
50 Din was used. Tashiro indicator solution was
prepared by mixing 0.03% alcoholic solution of methyl,red
(100 ml)with an aqueous solution of methylene blue (15 ml).
The reduction was carried out in platinum crucibles.in.a,
silica furnace (Siemens-Plania). A 10 ml microburette

optimum conditions for reduction led to the following
method being used.
Method. The s&mple (1 g) is weighed in a platinum
cru=cie, charcoal (1-5 g) added and the two well mixed
with a glass rod. The mixture is covered with a layer
of charcoal gabout 0.5 9),and heated in an electric
furnace (800 CI 10 min). After cooling, the crucible
is placed in a 250 ml beaker, water (100 ml) added and
the contents of the crucible boiled for 15 min with
stirring (using an appropriate stirring rod). The
crucible is then washed, and the solution with sediment.
transferred quantitatively so a 500 ml standard flask
and made up to volume at 20 C. The turbid solution is
well mixed and then allowed to settle for about 15 min

with a cot-ton wool filter to a titration flask and
titrated', after the addition of five drops of Tashiro's
indicator, with 0.1 N-HC1 solution using the micro-
burette. The titration is started in the cold and
finished with boiling solution, The results are
