TITLE: A Spectroscopic InvestiCation of a-Metallated Aldehydes.- and Ketones and Lithium Vinylate (Spektroskopicheskoye issle- dovaniye a-metallirovannykh alldegidov i ketonov i vinilata litiya) PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 127, Nr 1, Pp 115 116 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The a-mercurized aldehydes and ketones are able to react in two ways (at C and 0) and to form two series of derivatives (Refs 1-3). Either compounds are formed by the direct substitution of an ffg-atom (reaction with triphenyl-chloro-methane , or (as e.g. in the case of the reaction with acid halides) the reac- tion center shifts in consequence of a distinctly marked con- jugation of the Hg-C and C-0 bonds (a - n - conjugation).- The above-mentioned conjugation is distinctly marked in the substances mentioned in the title due to the presence of a me- tal atom with comparatively high polarizability (Hg, Sn). The authors investigated the ultraviolet- and infrared spectra of eight mercurized carbonyl compounds and of two ketones which contain Sn-atoms in a-position to the C-0 group. Table 1 shows that the frequencies of the carbonyl group in the infrared spectrum are in fact considerably shifted under the influence of the Hg-atom (Ref 4). Table 2,shows the absorp- tion maxima of the same compounds in the ultraviolet light, furthermore, those of acetaldehyde, isobutyric aldehyde; and acetone for comparison. An intenseabsorption band within the range (280-300 mil) occurred in these spectra of the Hg- and Sn-derivatives of the oxo-compounds, which is characteristic of carbonyl compounds; intensity increased by 200-300 times. The above-mentioned data confirms again the existence of an 6-n-conjunction in the compounds mentioned as can be proved as well by several chemical reactions. Furthermore, the ultravio- let- and infrared spectra of a very simple metal enolate were investigated, the structure of which is isomeric to that of Card 2/3 RUCH 2Me (1). Lithium vinylate (Ref 6) was investigated. A moderately intense band which corresponded to the C-C double bond was, however, found to occur in the infrared spectrum at 1610 cm- 1. It was considerably shifted due to tetal influence, which is well in line with the shifting of the double bond con- jugated with a phenyl- or carbonyl group (Ref 4). This confirms earlier conclusions concerning the C-structure of the organo- mercury compounds obtained by the addition of Hg acetate to ether and ester as well as concerning the O-structure of the cleavage product of mercury-bis-acetaldehyde by alkali metals. TITLE: On periodical variations In auroral light flux PER ODICAL: Geomagnetizm I acronomiya, v. 2, no. 6,*1962, 104- n46 TFAT: The records of observations in the Tiksi Bay performed with an 3 BH (EVN), electrophotometer of all sky, from*October 1959 to March 1960 and from January to A,pril 1962 were analyzed. Intervals between two splashes of, 6 light flux from auroras, with amplitudes not less than 3 -5% of the recorder scale, were measured on the 120 mm1hr sweep. On the basis of the analysis per- formed the authors assert that at least within the.interval of 12 minutes prior to and after every aurora flare, a noticeable periodical variation ofthe light flux and frequency of splashes is observed. The frequency is the highest in the maximum phase of auroral development; periodicity is double.with periods of I and 2 minutes. Time spans between maximum amplitudes of light flux of two auroras, following each other,,were also measured, and periodicity.was also de- tected with period magnitude of the order of 40 70 minutes.'
