present results of a detailed experimental investigation of the lifetimes of the ex-
cited levels, using a delayed-coincidence method. The source was obtained by irradi-

of the pulse-heieht coincidence-spectrum of the 1180-kev 7 rays-disclosed the pre-

the shortcomings o f the published decay scheme, the'authors.used a nev'procedurej, .in,

ABSTRACT: A laboratory apparatus for producing acetylene by electropyrolysi~ of liquid
hydrocarbons Is describqd (see- Fig. I.in the Enclosure) and the most successful con-

mensions and weight of the movable contacts as well as of the distance betweein the station-;
ary electrodes is investigated. The yield in the reactor increased and theconBumption of
electricity per 1 M3 gas decreased with increasing dimensions of the movable contacts.
With increasing weight of the movable contacts, theelectric consumption per *1 M3. acetylene
increased and the gas yield increased proportionally to the load; the composition of the,

pyrolytic gas remained constant. Decreasing the distance between the stationary elect- ~_j
rodes from -45 to* 25 mm increased the yield 3-4 times and decreased the electric cdnsu;np-'t:
~,tion by 25-30%.. The composition*of the gas did not depend on the distance b6tween the
electrodes, but in order to- ensure stable parameters for the process the distance- must be
kept constant. A plot of the intensity of clectropyrolysis against time showed a gradual
decrease in efficiency. Abrasion of the movable contact caused the consumption of electric
energy to, increase slightly and-the gas yield to decrease. The composition of the s

tained by pyrolysis of sulfur-containinj bieselfuel Is tabulated and the effect of, the raw
1material on the process is discussed. .. Calculations based on the experimental data 6howed
teat this process is very economical. The price of acetylene obtained by this imethod is
only 66% of that obtained by the carbidemethod. Thesimplicity of the apparatus and,
