ABSTRACT: A thermogravimetric study has shown the hish the -oxidative stability
d lzl
of certain conjugated polymers of the polyphenylene*/an po yphenylvinylen 9type.
For example, the weight loss in polyphenylene held ror 9.5 hr at 400C did hot exceed
5% i . I
It is postulated that on heating these polymers, in addition to degradation
processes, processes are also possible which involve cross-linking and the formation
of segments with condensed rings. This increases the stability range of such poly-';

It was established that addition of 5% of either of the tested thermal stabiliz-

thermally treated IV was most effoctive. It is concluded that deactivating abil-

PERIODICAL: Zavodskaya Laboratoriya, 1958, Vol. 24, Nr 7.
pp. 098 - 899 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Of late glass ampoules are used for corrosion investigations of
stee:.; the former make it possible to carry out several ex-
perinents at the same time, which fact is especially favorable
in the case of small sample quantities, and in the determinations
of rare metals, as well as of expensive and dangerous reagents.
In the laboratory mentioned below an apparatus was constructed
on t!iis basis, which serves for the determinations of chemically
resi3tive, rare metals in hydrochloric acid. The apparatus con-
sist3 of a heatable steel drum with a steeltube grid into which
eight' steel shells for the glass ampoules are Put. 40 ml liquid
and two samples each were put into each ampoule; then they were
put Ln a sealed state into the apparatus which was rotated by
a relucing gear. After the experiment the ampoules are broken

or in hydrochloric acid saturated with chlorine, or in HC1
with an addition of hydrogen peroxide were carried out at
100 - 1100. On this occasion a corrosion rate of less than
0,005 g/m2.hour was found. Thick-walled ampoules were also
used :'or the determinations of nickel, copper, aluminium and
other metals in molten AM at 2000. The experiments with this
apparatus must be carried oat taking into account all pre-
cauti)nary methods known in the technique. There are 2 figures.

Several strains of leuconostoc giviig a high yield were tested with a view to obtain-
ing a home-produced preparation cf dextran. The best was found to be the strain
'SF41, and this was selected for production. A formula for a protein-free synthetic
medium was worked out. A single routine fermentation method was used for the
cultivation and fermentation of dex:ran, giving a yield of dextran of up to 50'~',
which is the theoretical limit. Thiii method of production of the Soviet dextran pre-
paration - polyglukin - was successfully tried out in large-scale production. Refer-

TITLE: Extraction6of zirconium with a benzene solution of fatty acids
SOURCE: Zhurnal neorganicheskoy kh1mII, v.10, no.12, 1965, 2764-2773
TOPIC TAGS: zirconium, Tatty acid, solvent extraction, bafnium
ABSTRLCT: The mixture of C7-09 fatty acids used had thefollowing In--,.
dices: acid number--393-5); other number--O.B; unsaponifiables--O-.4; per-
cent moisture--0.1; fraci;ional composition: up to 121500--4.0%; 251-2600a..--,.
92.6%; above 26000--3.2%.. The radioactive Isotope zr95 was obtained ln~
the form of an oxalic ac.Ld solution. A working solution of 10 N HN03
was prepared. Radioactilre hafnium was obtained by irradiation of speci-
ally purified hafnium dioxide; manganese by irradiation of chromium in a-_,~
cyclotron. For extracti.)n of zirconium a solution of fatty acids with a -
concentration of 1.0 molas/~iter was added to a zirconium solution tagged..-
with the Zr95 isotope, ia 0.1 N HN03. Then, with agitation, there was
added a 2.5 molar SOlUtiDn Of OH300ON'a in a 0.5 molar solution of NaOH
to obtain the desired pH in the equilibrium aqueous phase (as a rule 5.9..'--
6.0). After addition of the acetate, the solution was stirred for 30.

min. The phase volume ra*ljio was 1 and the re-extraction time was 30 min,..:
After extraction, both phases were completely transparent. The autodi-
ffusion coefficients were determined by diffusion from capillaries..
Scattering of light by tho solutions of zirconium and fatty acids was
determined by a conventional method.- A 10-3 molar solution of ZrIV in a
1.6% solution of fatty acids in benzene was ultracentrifuged for 4 hours.-
at a rate of 59,800 rev/min. and the optical diffraction was measured.
All properties measured axe shown In tables and graphs. The article- eon__:.
eludes with a discussion of the possible mechanism of the extraction. The
data indicate that zirconium exists in the organic phase in the form of.,
associated compounds of a'colloidal nature. The co-extraction of trace
quantities of yttrium, niobium., and other metals was observed during-the
extraction of zirconium withfatty acids. It was also found that zircon-"
ium, hatnium, and yttrium are efficiently sorbed by silica gel from the
organic phase. It was established that the diffe.renoes.in the extractiol-:1
,of zirconium and hafnium, in the system studied are not sufficient for
separation of the two meta:Ls. Orig. art. has: 9 figures and 5 tables.
