TITLE: Correction of Aperture Distortion (Korrektsiya aperturnykh iskazheniy)
PERIODICAL. Radio, 1957, Nr 4, pp 37-40 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Physical phenomena and methods of determining aperture distortion
were examined in the "Radio" journal, 1956, Nr 10. The purpose of this article
is to show for which kinescopes and under which conditions the aperture distor- .
tion should be taken into account. Aperture distortion in traneftr-- characteris-
tics is manifest,!d by a blurring st.-.--ip when a black-white border is reproduced.
Blurring strip eata for 40LKIB and 18LK15 kinescopes, determined in a labo-
ratory, are supplied. Resolution of the human eye is defined. It is equal to
the angle of two minutes. It has been found that aperture distortion is negligible
with a 40LKIB kinescope. Type 18LK15 kinescope has a considerable aperture
distortion, and an anti-aperture correction is necessary in this case. The cor-
rection is also necessary for types 23LKIB and 31LK2B kinescopes. Aperture
distortion is still higher in TV tranmr ittiU tubes, particularly in an image
iconoscope. Ppeqture distortion is manifested by the fact that the signal magni-
tude decrease:j as the video frequency increases. A circuit or a multistage unit

can be used to correct the aperture distortion; the frequency characteristic of
such a corrective device should have a rise on the high video frequencies'. This
rise may exceed six to eight times the amplification on lower frequencies while
the phase characteristic of the corrective device should be linear. It is more
economical to introduce the anti-aperture correction in the TV transmitter. At
the present time, such a correction exists only in the movie channels of the
Moscow TV Ver.ter. The "Avangard" TV set also has an anti-aperture correc-
tion in its final stages. G. V. Braude, Doctor of Technical Sciences, and his
co-workers have performed , extensive research on anti-aperture correc-
tion. During 054-1956, Braude's group did considerable work at the Moscow
TV Center, introducing the corrective measures. Two corrective circuits are
examined in the article: (1) a simple LCR circuit in the grid; it is used in the
first stage of a video amplifier or in the anode detector; (2) a T-circuit which
can be used in the final stage of a video amplifier in combination with other cir-
cuits in the preceding stages - Numerical examples of calculation are given to
illustrate both circuits. Instructions for alignment of the corrective devices in
a TV set are supplied. As a result of the application of the above anti-ap6rture

TITLE: Improving DeHnition at the Screen Edges
(Povysheniye chet'Aosti na kraya-kh ekrana)
PERIODICAL: Radio, 1957, Nr 6, pp 45-47 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Video co--.-rection and anti-aperture correction are used for improving
the definition of a TV pict-tre. The best TV sets have a definition of 500-550
lines in the center determined on the test pattern 0249. However, all TV sets
using kinescopes with electromagnetic focusing have inuch higher definition in
the center than around the edges of the screen. Irregular definition over the
screen is due to the fact that the light spot is not uniformly focused at all points
of the screen. The causes of defocusing are: screen curvature, non-uniformity
of the deflecting field, fringe fields in the deflecting system, etc. The screen
curvature is the major cause, As a result, each line is wider and its maximum
brightness is lowex toward the edge of the screen. As a corrective measure,
an addition of 276 alternating focusing current is suggested. An additional fo-
cusing coil was placed close to the fundamental focusing coil in a Soviet-make
TV set, "Temp. " A 3-tube correction circuit necessary for generation of para-
bolic shape current has been developed. Two tubes 6N8S and one tube 6P6S

were used. Field-frequency and horizontal -frequency parabolic voltages were
generated. A circuit diagram, parts data, and instructions for building, align-
ment, and adjustments cf the correction unit are given. Tests have shown that
lines widen only by 10% or less with this correction system in action. Electro-
static focusing kinescopf-s, such as 35LKZB and 43LKZB, can be corrected in
a similar way, the only difference being that parabolic voltages should be ap-
plied instead of parabolic: currents.
There are five figures in the article.

TITLE: Pulse g.~nerator for excitation of piezoelectric
radia to---s
PERIODICAL: Akademira nauk SSSR. Izvestiya. Seriya geofiziches-
kaya, no. 5, 1961, 730-731
TEXT: The quality of pulses produced by a piezoelectric radiator
is determined by the level of residual transient oscillations.
This level is determined again by two factors: the pressure of
harmonies and upsett::_ng of the conditions of damping of self-oscil-
lation after the exc:;-tation pulse has been removed. In the piezo-
electric pulse generator, as described by L. N. Rykunov and V. D.
Peofilaktov (Ref. 1; Izv. AN SSSR, ser. geofiz., no. 2, 1961), the
harmonies are adequa,;ely suppressed, but the damping of transients
depends very much on the losses in the radiator and since these
losses vary in pract:-ce to a considerable extent., need arose for
the design of a generator producing trapezoidal pulses, for which

it was found that the amplitude of transients was a minimum. The
description of such a pulse generator is given in the present ar-
ticle. The generator oonsists of the following stages: 1) A
blocking oscillator wLth a cathode follower output, double triode
6H9C (6N9S) permalloy case trandformer, 30 turnslin primary and
secondary. Pulse length 3 x 10- 6 sec, amplitude 0 - 160 V, minimum
rep. frequency 100 kc/s; 2) A cathode-c-oupled one-shot multi-vi-
brator, double triode 6H8C (MS), duration of output pulse 3x10_ 6
to 160 x 15-6 sec; 3) Amplifier-limiter, plutode 6)1(4 (6Zh4'); 4)
Phase inverter, 1/2 6NBS; 5) Cathode follower, 1/2 6N8S with dif-
ferentiating network in the cathode cct (0.01,4F and 100 and 200 k
ohm resistors). The 100 k ohm variable resistance permits one to
vary the trailing edE:e of amplitude of the O/P pulse; 6) Output
stage, pentode rY-50 (GU-50), ofitput pulse amplitude 850 V, act-
ing also as a limiter, forming thus a trapezoidal pulse. Experi-
ments in the use of the above generator for exciting a cubic bloc
of dihydrophosphate of ammonium have shown that the amplitude of

transients depends on the ratio of the amplitudes of leading and

transients is less than 7%. The authors acknowledge the help of

TEXT,~ The speci.al case considered is one in which the outer helix
pitch angle is 9(1" (infinite anisotropic conductance in the
direction of the axis). With suitable choice of parameters, such
a system can be made dispersionless over a wide band of frequencie
with a fairly high coupling impedance, suitable for wideband
amplifiers and delay lines. Acknowledgment is made to

Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Fizicheskaya, 1957, Vol 21,
#6, pp 862-864 (USSR)
The authcr criticizes the Bloch method of deducing an approxi-
mate solvAion for the problem of electron interaction in an
ideal cr2-stal and attempts to show that such an approximate treeb-
ment con!;ains two errors.
On the basis of his analysis the author asserts that a linear
chain ca-a be ferromagnetic as well as a plane lattice or a
space lattice, because for all of these cases the spontaneous
magneti7,ation is finite, contrary to the Bloch conclusion.
No references are cited.
There is an editorial remark to the effect that the author's
asserticn as to the inaccuracy of Bloch's derivation does not
seem to be sufficiently convincing.
