TITLE: Determination of the Amount of Heat Recovered (Opredeleniye
velichiny vozvrashchennogo tepla)

ABSTRACT: Upon pointing out the shortcomings of the existing methods for the
determination of the amount of the heat recovered in the process of
the expansion of steam in a multistage turbine, the author proposes
a more convenient method of calculation. An expression is derived
for the elementary increment of the available adiabatic temperature
drop based on a study of the expansion process with due considera-
tion of the internal losses in the T-S diagram; upon summation, the
total value of the heat recovered during the cycle is determined.

PURPOSE AND COVERAGE: This textbook is i ntended for marine engineering
students at schools of higher education and may also be used by tech-
nicians at marine research and development institutes, A new method
for calculating marine steam turbines is introduced. This method re-
quires no successive approximations and permits an exact analysis of
the effect on a steam turbine of each of its components using steam
under any arrangement within the cycle. This method is reported in
full for the first time, It'has been used by research and develop-
ment institutes for several years and was used to calculate the stean
turbines for such large ships as the "Peking" and "Sofia.lf Data
needed for the practical application of this method are presented In
various tables, charts, graphs, and empirical formulas. Examples of
the calculations of modern turbines are also given.
