Heat treatment included heating to the usual 1275-12850C, stepped quenching with brief holding at 5500C (as practiced at many Soviet plants) and holding at various lower teinperatures, and quenching in a salt bath. Details of all treatment procedures are given. Deformation was judged by changes in the length of specimens due to martensitic transformation, for it was known from previous experience that the deformation of drills, taps, or reamers changes in direct pro- portion to changes in length.
